Happy Friday fangirls & fanboys! To celebrate this fabulous day, the start of the glorious weekend, I am going to participate in a Five Fandom Friday Challenge! What is FFF you ask? It’s a weekly challenge created by bloggers The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick to come up with a top 5 list to fit a geeky-theme. My Fangirl Life doesn’t necessarily do it every week, but sometimes we want to hang out with the cool kids & join in the fun You can click HERE to see what other FFFs we’ve taken part in.
This Friday: People You Want on Your Side During an Apocalypse (An awesome topic suggested by the equally-as-awesome Kendall Ashley… go check her out!)
Whilst contemplating the ideal Apocalypse Survival Team (something I actually do more often than is necessary… especially since it’s probably not necessary at all…) it came to me that you need to have a mix of skills & expertise within your group. Not everyone can be the leader. Just as not everyone needs to be an expert on weapons. It’s important to have those who will ‘do whatever it takes’, yet they must be opposed by people who are ruled by compassion & thoughtfulness. It’s a balancing act. This contemplation lead me to make a list of the 6 people you need when the world is ending:
1. The Leader
2. The Strategist
3. The Fighter
4. The Weapons Expert
5. The Inventor
6. The Medic
I felt especially qualified to make the hard choices on this week as I was recently recruited to a real life Apocalypse Survival Team. Ok, I’ll admit it wasn’t a real apocalyptic group. First of all, *Spoiler Alert!* the apocalypse hasn’t actually happened (Shocking, I know). Second, we in no way prepared for an impending dystopian world. On the contrary, we just stood around in awesome costumes & had photos taken of us… but we looked apocalypse ready! If you want to check my “real-life” team out you can click through to My Fangirl Life Cosplay: Post-Apocalyptic Photo Shoot.
Just as my recently assembled team fit these character tropes, I used my 6 categories to pick my fictional team. I made a conscious decision to not pick any characters with magic or superpowers as that felt like it was against the point for some reason… Perhaps because dystopian stories typically don’t feature those types of characters? Instead it’s all about weird mixes of technology & the odd spooky supernatural piece. Anyways, watch out for my team when the time comes; we’ll be a force to be reckoned with! Let’s break it down:
The Leader: Thomas
(The Maze Runner/The Scorch Trials)
Thomas has many of the attributes of an ideal leader. He’s confident & committed. Remember when he decided WCKD was not good? He stuck with it. People were literally dying and he was still holding to his convictions, despite having no memory to back it up… which leads to another trait: intuition. His positive attitude will keep morale up while his creativity will inspire new ideas for survival. Throw in a healthy dose of selflessness & a strong survival instinct and you’ve got someone to follow to the literal end of the Earth. Plus he’s a post-apocalypse situational expert and he’s super hot. (I am, of course, choosing older, Dylan-O’Brien-y, movie Thomas rather than 12-year-old book Thomas).
The Strategist: Kris
(My Fangirl Life)
Five Fandom Friday only allowed me to pick 5 companions for the end of the world so I obviously need to fill in the sixth position. Luckily I am a born strategist. As a solid INTJ personality I always say I am one tragic accident from being a super villain. Perhaps my tragic accident is the apocalypse but instead of turning evil I use my powers of logic for good! Whether it’s plotting the best route to our next destination or heading research into the monsters that are currently hunting us, I will provide a basis of knowledge & planning to the group. My function will be to make The Leader’s life easier, and if Thomas & I have to spend ample time together to do so, even better!
The Fighter: Oliver Queen
Oliver Queen is a man of many skills. Expert Archer – a long-range weapon is great for taking out zombies. Expert Marksman – just because he doesn’t use a gun doesn’t mean he can’t. Expert Sword-Wielder – joining the League of Assassins was good for something. Expert at Hand-to-Hand Combat – because sometimes you don’t have a weapon. He’s crazy fit, as strong as is humanly possible, and strategic to boot. He might not be the best ‘follower’, but he will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Need to make a hard decision? One you’re not sure you can live with yourself after acting on it? Oli will be able to make it happen. There’s also the fact that he is hot as hell. That doesn’t hurt.
The Weapons Expert: Dean Winchester
The elder Winchester brother’s official title would be “Weapons Expert” but he has much more to offer. He’s been through his fair share of apocalypses. He has ample experience with averting them, but I also think he’d be useful in the aftermath. The Impala he is usually seen cruising in would be a sick ride, mainly because of the trunk full of heavy artillery. Bow & Arrows. Sword. Shot Gun. Pistol. A variety of knives. Not to mention the weird & wild tools for taking on various ghouls. His additional knowledge of the supernatural is just an added bonus. Should the apocalypse be accompanied by zombies, ghosts, or monsters of any sorts Dean will know how to deal with them. Plus he’s hella hot.
The Inventor: Tony Stark
Dystopian futures are often depicted with strange mish-mashes of technology. Sometimes it’s advanced beyond our wildest imagination. Other times survivors are relying on transistor radios powered by potatoes. Tony Stark is the ultimate inventor, who could make sense of any type of technology and then make it useful. It might seem like I’m cheating on my “no superpowers” rule, but Tony is just a normal guy (a normal, crime-fighting, billionaire, genius guy). A normal guy who just happens to come with a super suit that can be used as a weapon and protection. I dare a zombie to try to bite through Iron Man. Perhaps he could just make one for each of us. We’d be set! Also, look at him!
The Medic: Jemma Simmons
(Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
Have you seen Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D.? If you have I bet you can’t name another doctor as bad ass as Jemma Simmons. Yes, her S.H.I.E.L.D. training was in science rather than combat but her field assignments have taught her to hold her own. She’s brilliant, has medical training, and has been exposed to plenty of tech through her partnership with Fitz. She’s synthesized serums under pressure, fought off powered people, and even convincingly worked undercover in an enemy lab. This girl is more than just a big brain and a pretty face… speaking of which: it doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous. Should this team need to aid in repopulating Earth you can guarantee that future generations will be stunning.
What do you think of my choices? Is there a better character to sub into one of my positions? Or perhaps I left out a key skill or area of expertise I would need in the new dystopian world? Let me know in the comments!
Love & Luck,
