I, along with the rest of the world, am currently obsessed with Game of Thrones. I know I wrote last week about the sweet girl power moments this season, but that just isn’t enough for me. I’ve now had some time to think and process, and I want to continue to theorize/analyze this for the next 10 months or so, until I can get new episodes. So I’ve decided I’d like to put together a series of articles about my favourite things that I believe will happen to each of the main characters in Game of Thrones. To start, read on for my Cersei and Jaime Lannister theories!
Cersei finally has everything she ever wanted. She’s sitting on the Iron Throne, as the ruler of Westeros. Sadly, this happened at the cost of the last of her children, and as I mentioned last week, Cersei without children is a terrifying prospect. They really were the one thing that softened her.
Of course she has Jaime, but he is a different man than he was during season 1, or chapter 1 of the first book. He is no longer the Jaime Lannister that threw Bran out of that tower window. He’s grown as a person, and he’s learned to stop and think for himself. Jaime has his own odd brand of honour, even though he is consistently stripped of it when people refer to him as the Kingslayer. He has learned to care about people other than Cersei, despite that speech about Cersei mattering to him most. Jaime has become a new person, and the only one who really sees that at this point seems to be Brienne of Tarth. Even Cersei may not understand exactly who Jaime is now.
In the moment that Jaime watches Cersei sit down on the Iron Throne, the look on his face says that he’s just not in the same place as her anymore. I don’t know that he’ll agree with what she’s done to gain this power, and I feel a bit like if she doesn’t have him and her children to balance her out, she could go a little off the deep end. Mad Queen, anyone? She’s already heading down that road.
And on that note, let’s move on to what might be in store for these two. I’m interested to see how Jaime is going to react to Cersei at this point, and I think the one thing that is really clear is that Cersei needs to die. How else will Daenerys take the throne?
Arya could certainly kill her. I’ll leave too much discussion about Arya for another day, but I think we all need to keep in mind that Cersei was always at the top of her list.
Though I do quite like that theory, I think the more awesome conclusion is that Jaime will spend time trying to “save” Cersei from herself, and trying to reconnect with her. But in the end, much like what happened with the Mad King, he will realize that Cersei is too dangerous to live, and he’ll be the one to end her life. Though Jaime is a different person than he was when he killed the Mad King Aerys, his honour will not allow Cersei to continue to live and destroy the kingdom. Jaime Lannister will be both a Kingslayer and a Queenslayer, as well as a Kinslayer, but he will ultimately be one of the heroes of the story.
This will parallel Jaime’s history, including the one act that has shaped most of his life, and will bring him full circle around to the man he is today. I can certainly see it.
