My sister and I recently re-watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I eagerly jumped on this when she mentioned she’d like to see them again. Having been a fan for years, I was excited – the most exciting part being that my sister is “totally into Lord of the Rings” right now – those were her exact words.
Watching the trilogy with my sister provided insightful and often hilarious commentary. One thing we discussed on a number of occasions was how useless Frodo is. Like completely useless. Yes, he was being seduced by the ring but he essentially did nothing useful during the entirety of the 3 films. You know who was awesome? Sam. Samwise Gamgee is the real star of this Middle Earth tale.
Let’s just look at The Fellowship of the Ring. If it wasn’t for Sam, Frodo never would have made it anywhere. Probably not even out of the Shire. Definitely not to Rivendell!
Here’s the proof…
If it wasn’t for Sam… Frodo probably would have died when Merry & Pippin bombarded them in Farmer Maggot’s crop. Because BOTH Merry and Pippin would have run into Frodo and that would have been too much for this poor hobbit (Frodo and Sam each had a hobbit land on them).
If it wasn’t for Sam… Frodo would have put the ring on after the hobbits found the shortcut to mushrooms and the Ringwraiths would have found him and the ring (Sam is the one who knocks him out of his trance).
If it wasn’t for Sam… They wouldn’t have got Bucklebury Ferry untied quick enough to escape the Black Rider (Sam was the one who untied the ropes).
If it wasn’t for Sam… Frodo never would have recognized sexy Aragorn keeping an eye on him while lurking in the shadows (it was Sam who noticed).
If it wasn’t for Sam… Frodo and the rest of the hobbits would have had no supplies (seriously, Sam carries everything and brings the horse).
The only thing Sam does wrong in the first part of the journey is partake in the whole cooking on Weathertop debacle, but I’m choosing to believe Merry and Pippin had a larger role to play there. And while Arwen shows up and saves the day before he can collect Athelas to help slow the poison in Frodo, Sam totally would have.
Alright, I know some of those are a bit of a stretch but seriously, that ring would not have been destroyed if it wasn’t for Sam.
“Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam” – Frodo
At least Frodo realizes that.
Till next time.
