We interrupt our regularly scheduled Tuesday Walk of Shame for an exciting new post! You may remember Kristy as the Black Widow in our SHIELD cosplay photos. Like any good SHIELD agent would, she had a lot of feels about the season 3 premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD last week and wanted to share her thoughts with the internet. Be sure to check back next week for another edition of Tuesday Walk of Shame.
Now onto Kristy’s reaction to Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD 3×01 “Laws of Nature”.
Quick Summary: Lots of stuff happened. And Fitz broke all our hearts.
Spoiler Alert: Though it may be obvious from the title of this post, according to the My Fangirl Life Spoiler Guide, we need to warn you in advance. This is a recap of the season 3 premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.
Wow Agents of SHIELD. You honestly know how to start a season off with a bang.
This recap is later than I would have liked it to be, partly because so much information was thrown into the first episode that I needed some time to process… But mostly because THAT SCENE with Fitz broke me and I needed time to recover. Now, for those of you that have yet to watch the episode… why are you reading this? Go watch it! For those of you that have watched and would like to read my personal comments on it, here we go:
What I was amazed with was how quickly the episode started. There were no explanations, no flashbacks. It started with a bang, literally, and expected you to follow. One thing I especially love about SHIELD is that they don’t dumb down the viewing experience for the audience, but this season is shaping up to be a bit more complicated than the previous. There are quite a few hands stirring the pot.
Different opposing parties that we know of:
- SHIELD (the good guys)
- Hydra (*cough*Ward*cough*)
- Rosalind Price (aka woman who stays eerily calm, travels with numerous armed men, and has freaky chemistry with Coulson)
- Lash… (alien looking guy…. hunts Inhumans, probably an Inhuman. All around bad news)
With all these differing parties, this season is bound to offer complex interweaving storylines surrounding different characters.
The episode starts off with poor bloke Joey, who has unfortunately acquired new, unwanted Inhuman powers allowing him to melt metal, and he’s quickly whisked away to SHIELD headquarters. Skye….er…Daisy (that’s gonna take a while) tries to console the sad sack. Unfortunately he’s going to be locked up for quite some time until he gets his powers under control. Overall, he seems like a pretty cool guy, and how awesome is it that SHIELD finally introduced their first LGBT character?!
We then move to Rosalind Price. I really don’t like her… not yet anyways. We honestly don’t have enough information on her character to understand her (it’s only the first episode!) but she was sure giving Coulson the stink eye. I don’t know what else to say about her now, other than the fact that apparently she’s NOT killing Inhumans? Even though the beginning of the episode made us believe she was.
We jump back to Skye (darn-it!)… Daisy… and Mack (she’s the muscle, he’s the fluffy teddy bear) trying to convince Lincoln to help them out at the base with Joey. Lincoln says no, they threaten him, he says no… they threaten him again…blah blah. UNTIL. LASH. SHOWS. UP. And starts being a total badass. I actually can’t wait to see more of Lash. All I know about him from a quick search on the Interwebs is that he hunts down Inhumans and decides whether they’re worthy of having received the gift of Inhuman powers bestowed upon them. And if they’re not…. he, well you know. WHO SAID YOU COULD JUDGE, LASH?! WHO?
Either way, I know he’s evil (as far as we know), but he looks cool. He seems like quite the mystery, and is strong as heck (went against Daisy AND Lincoln without so much as a scratch), so I definitely want to know more about him.
Hunter is going Hunting… for Ward. And good riddance too! It’s about time. Honestly, you may completely disagree with me, since I know the internet is in a major fight about this, and we all have our own opinions, but my opinion is… I HATE WARD. I actually despise Ward. I don’t remember the last time I hated a character so much *cough* Umbridge *cough* (Quick note: I have absolutely nothing against the actor Brett Dalton; in fact I think he’s very talented. He plays Ward SO well that he’s actually made me hate the character. That’s a sheer testament to his skill as an actor). From the moment he threw FitzSimmons out of the plane, I hated him. Ward is sick, manipulative, and twisted. Even though his parents messed him up, he had the opportunity to learn, grow and be better… And he didn’t take it. Ward is too far gone, and his attempt to take out Hunter while forcing Bobbi to watch was disgusting. So I’m rooting for Hunter to go take him out. I’m actually hoping for some good smack talk between the two first, because we know Hunter is a hilarious, loving idiot, and I just want to see him throw some heat at Ward before he locks him up forever. And then Bobbi and Hunter can be together. Bobbi x Hunter love.
And now… to my personal favourite part of the episode. FITZ. I honestly love FitzSimmons more than I love some people IRL, but that’s not the reason I love Fitz in this episode. Fitz has by far had some of the most compelling arcs of the show, and his character has easily gone through the most transformation. When we first see him this episode, gone is the stuttering, anxious Fitz we saw in Season 2. Now we’re introduced to a whole new Fitz, a man on a mission to find Simmons. Fitz 1.2 I’ll call him. Fitz 1.2 is running about in Morocco, generally being an extremely good-looking badass (Wardrobe… put him in a suit more often!!). It’s easy to tell that he’s desperate. He mouths off to a dangerous Moroccan businessman, and offends his lack of height. I laughed out loud when he told him to use the briefcase as a booster seat (Fitz actor, Iain De Caestecker for James Bond!). Making things short (see what I did there?) he tricked the guys, got the goods and ran off… back to SHIELD headquarters.
Now to the most heartbreaking scene I think I’ve ever watched on TV. Fitz opens the scroll, finds the word “Death” written on it in Hebrew and Coulson tells him it’s time to say goodbye. Personally, I love Coulson, but I wanted to tell him to shut up at that exact moment and scream, “SHE’S NOT DEAD!”. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen someone look so completely shattered as Fitz did when he read that scroll. What he does next is a scene that I’ve watched repeatedly every day since the episode aired… because it’s that good. Fitz yells desperately at the rock to “DO SOMETHING”. But really, he’s saying “take me too, I can’t live without her, I need her, she’s everything to me, I love her,”… DO SOMETHING. I almost have no words to describe the sheer power of that scene, because it was done SO well. Absolutely brilliant acting from Iain De Caestecker. It felt real, and I actually sobbed, and every time I watch it again, I shed a tear. At this moment, Fitz is a man with nothing left to live for, so I can’t wait to see his reaction when he finds out she’s alive! Maybe a kiss? Ah one can hope. FitzSimmons <3
And last but not least! The tag at the end. SIMMONS IS ALIVE! I mean, I think we all knew she was alive, since she appeared in the promotional photos, but it was more a matter of “What the heck happened to Simmons?” “Why did the blasted rock swallow her?” “Will she have powers now?”. The answer I believe is no, she will not have powers. However, one minor hiccup… SHE’S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE. Where’s Thor when you need him? I’d be ok with Chris Hemsworth showing up to help them out. I think that’s a sacrifice we could make for his help in rescuing Simmons. I’m pretty sure she’s on a Kree planet, as the Monolith was Kree, so it only makes sense that it would transport there.
My questions are:
– What was she running from?
– Is our science baby ok?
– How will she get back?
– How will Fitz find her?
– WHEN WILL WE GET A REUNION SCENE?!?!?!?! *flips desk*
Overall that was a quality episode of Agents of SHIELD and I can’t wait for more. It seems like it’s going to be an action-packed season, so hold on tight fellow fans. I can’t wait for the ride! I just hope no one dies…. except maybe Ward (don’t hate me).
Check back after next week’s episode for a new recap! And more rants.
