Please note, there are spoilers about this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy in this post. But if you follow the show at all, you probably know the most major one.
I’ve been meaning to write a post about Grey’s Anatomy and other Shonda Rhimes shows for quite some time now. Overall I’m a fan of the intrigue, the intensity, the romance, the dialogue, and the creative way her stories are put together. But right now, I’m pretty mad at Ms. Rhimes. I’m sitting here on the couch having just watched last night’s episode, sobbing uncontrollably into my crappy McDonald’s coffee.
It’s just not fair.
I realize that Grey’s Anatomy was looking to hit fans right in the gut, and boy did they ever. But I just can’t shake the feeling that Derek’s death was a horrible idea. I’m upset that it happened, period. I’m upset about how it happened. And I’m upset that this means that poor Meredith, who has been through so much, has to go through even more bullshit. That girl is never going to find her happily ever after. Is there even one for her anymore? This entire series has been about their love story. I mean, yes, there are other people in the show who get focus sometimes and all that, but what is the one love story EVERYONE was rooting for? Meredith and Derek, even when they weren’t together. Oh geez, I may need to add them to my top OTP list… I hadn’t realized how overly attached I am. I feel like I’ve wasted 10 years of heartache on this show, and now nothing’s ever going to be right again.
And don’t even get me started with the plot holes in this episode (come on… 3 cars are driving close together on this road, then no one comes by until the emergency vehicles *magically* arrive? And there’s literally no cell phone service until the moment Derek is in his car and another vehicle comes and crashes into him?). That is a whole other topic.
As I mentioned, I’m not only upset about the fact that it happened – I’m upset about how it happened. Derek Shepherd should not have died in such a common way. Derek Shepherd should have died fantastically. But to get through saving 4 people from a 2-car accident, then hop in his car when it’s over and be hit by a truck? It all seems so pointless. And even then, he could have made it, but what really killed him was poor service at the hospital? Or perhaps being brought to the wrong hospital, where they seemed to make EVERY wrong call? That stupid fu#$@%ing neurosurgeon was out FOR DINNER and said he’d arrive in 20 MINUTES and then doesn’t show up for AN HOUR AND A HALF which is TOO LATE and by the time he does Derek’s BRAINDEAD? That cannot be how Derek Shepherd dies. I refuse to be ok with this.
I don’t know if I can even watch this show any more. It’s probably going to result in me dissolving into a puddle of tears just thinking about Derek week after week.
Cheers (or tears),
