I was psyched by this news! I remember the first time I read The Mortal Instruments books, patiently waiting for the next installment to hear what shenanigans Jace & Clary, Simon & Izzy and Magnus & Alec would get up to next. I was the excited to hear a film was finally being made. When it premiered I loved the casting but overall the movie was lacking. I wanted more! And not the more a sequel would give me.
Now it’s becoming a TV series and I’m excited for them to start fresh, giving the Shadowhunter world the adaptation it deserves.
The movie did a great job of getting the feel of the Shadowhunter world. This world is dark and hidden and the showed a decent amount of the underside of a city. However, I do believe more can be done. I want to see warlocks and faeries and vampires. And I want them all to be frightening. I want the blood curdling demons. I want shadow hunters who are truly warriors and heroes. I want it to feel just like the world I’ve created in my head.
2. The Characters
I think the strongest aspect of The Mortal Instruments as a series are the characters. There are a number of complex personalities in these books, each with their own troubles and desires. Throughout the novels you have the time to get to know these each of these intricate people and see them develop. We didn’t get this in the movie. Everything was rushed and a few characters got wholly pushed aside. In a TV series I hope they take the time to dig deep on each and every one. Alex needs to be shy and insecure, yet strong. Izzy needs to be fierce and badass yet vulnerable. And Magnus needs to be fab-u-lous.
3. The Casting
I loved the casting of the movie. I love Lily Collins. I love Jamie Campbell Bower. However, I am open to change. I understand these actors would not be interested in television. They also might be too old now…actually they’re definitely too old. I hope the casting directors look at some of the fan casting. I have seen some ideas that could not be more spot on. However, there isn’t anyone I’m rooting for at this point. I just want Jace to be dreamy and lean and blonde and I want Clary to be little with red hair. I would love for the casting to closely follow the book, but then again tv series based on YA novels have diverted in the past and been extremely successful (I’m looking at you Gossip Girl & Pretty Little Liars). Either way my fingers are crossed they get it right.
This is arguably the most popular relationship to come out of The Mortal Instruments. It’s definitely my favourite! Magnus barely shows up in City of Bones but his appearance is important. It’s the framework Malec is built from. I want scenes between Magnus and Alec where you can feel their sexual tension. I really hope Magnus makes the cut. I have a strong feeling he will (especially if they have faith in this show running more than one season) but it still makes my list.
5. The Future
Most importantly, I want this series to be really good. Like REALLY REALLY good. I want not only the books fans to love it, but for the show to gain a larger following. I think this is the only way we’ll ever see Will, Jem and Tessa on a screen. And honestly, it’s that love triangle that I would kill to see.
