Welcome to another instalment of your favourite My Fangirl Life series: I Ship That. Here we will discuss our ships, your ships, or just any ships we want to talk about. Ron and Hermione? Sure. Dany and Jon? Yes!! Outlaw Queen? Absolutely. Kris and cheese? Why not! Tune in to this series for discussions on all of our favourite ships – maybe some of them are yours too!
Don’t know what ships are? Here’s a quick definition from our Fangirl Glossary.
Ship (noun) Derived from the word relationship, a ship is a romantic pairing of two characters. Ship can also be used as a (verb). To ship two characters is to pair them in a romantic relationship.
Now, on to the important stuff!
I am a huge fan of the creative teen fiction genius of Tamora Pierce. If you haven’t read about the land of Tortall or any of her Circle of Magic books, you are definitely missing out. She writes funny and relatable characters and I have been following some of them since I was 12 years old. I am always eagerly anticipating the next Tamora Pierce book.
I recently read Battle Magic, an account of Briar, Evvy, and Rosethorn’s adventures in Yanjing and Gyongxe. If you have been following the Circle of Magic series at all, I’m sure you’ve been wondering exactly what happened. A lot of time is spent alluding to horrible things that happened in Yanjing in The Will of the Empress. I know that I, for one, spent years wondering. I was ecstatic to finally find out… but that is not what I’m going to discuss today. In fact, what I am going to discuss has very little to do with that book. Battle Magic was simply a reminder of how strongly I feel about this topic:
Briar Moss and Lady Sandrilene fa Toren need to be a thing. Seriously.
Is there anyone else out there that spends their time brainstorming what their ship name is? I can’t quite get it right – Brandry? Saniar? Lady Moss? Is there anyone that reads way too far into every scene that involves the two of them interacting? Or starts imagining perfect futures anytime one of them is inside the other’s head? I don’t care if Briar has cute teasing relationships with all three of the girls, I just passionately, inexplicably want Sandry and Briar to be together.
How amazing would that story be? A thief, condemned to a life of hard work and probably early death is saved by a mage who sees the power in him, and he ends up marrying a girl who will probably be named ruler of Emelan. And Sandry is just the kind of lady that would make this happen. True, she takes her duty very seriously, but she also doesn’t let anyone boss her around. And no one can argue that current Briar – the educated mage – wouldn’t be equal to the task of ruling. Sure, he would not have been ready for it at a younger age, but his early life on the streets has really taught him to stand up for what is right. Since then, he has spent all his time protecting the place he feels is now home, standing up to rulers that treat their subjects unfairly, and punishing rich people who prey on the poor. And after everything he’s done for the kingdom of Emelan, the people there would have to accept him… or, you know, he’d sick the grass on them. Because plant mages do that.
What do you think? Would Briar and Sandry make a good pair? Or do you ship one of them with someone else? (Blasphemy!) Let us know in the comments.
