Welcome to Game of Thrones week here on My Fangirl Life! We’re counting down the days until the new season premieres on Sunday, so check back throughout the week for all sorts of Westeros-related fun!
As my contribution to Game of Thrones Week I wanted to talk about the fashion of Westeros. In doing research for that post I came upon ‘The Wonderful World of Westeros’ or the Disney Princesses as Game of Thrones characters. I’d seen this before and thought it was great however, I was skeptical of the matches. So I decided I’d dig in and check it out…
This is the obvious choice for Brienne but it’s also perfect. Mulan is a warrior, just like Brienne, and wouldn’t be happy sitting around at King’s Landing in a gown and drinking wine (though heaven knows why, that sounds like a splendid time). Mulan and Brienne are far more suited for a life of battle.
Ariel looks just like Melisandre. That red hair is so vibrant…so Melisandre. The look is perfect. However, I just don’t think Ariel could pull of a Melisandre level of evil. Perhaps if Ursula was embodying her??
Jasmine as Ellaria
Ellaria and Jasmine is another pairing that totally looks the part. The bright orange is stunning with both of their skin tones. I don’t know a ton about Ellaria (just met her in the books and she hasn’t been super prominent in the show yet) but I think her and Jasmine might be similar. They’re just on opposite ends of the spectrum. Jasmine is the princess who wants to be free and make her own decisions while Ellaria is the bastard lover of a prince. Ellaria might want to be free and make her own choices, I just don’t know yet. Really all I know is that she has a wicked scream and cry.
Belle as Margaery
Belle is smart and independent while Margaery is often a pawn in larger schemes (though I do think Margaery herself plays a large role in planning these schemes). I think both Margaery and Belle are smart and headstrong but I’m still not sure Belle would enjoy being in Margaery’s place. I don’t think she’s quite power hungry enough; she prefers books to people. I do think Belle would be up for one of these marriages Margaery has faced. An age difference shouldn’t matter to Belle – she did fall in love with a Beast. I really enjoy the parallels drawn here with the roses, very clever. Belle definitely looks the part as Margaery, but I’m also not certain she’d be up for such revealing dresses.
Snow White definitely fits the image of Shae’s shy and quiet servant side. Snow would probably enjoy not being the center of attention. She’s bright and bubbly and good at being happy and making others happy. Which brings us to the part of Shae I’m not so certain Snow would embrace. Does Snow White have a kinky side? How would see feel about being a prostitute? Snow does spend a lot of her time with dwarves… it could be a fun twist on her character.
Rapunzel as Sansa
This one I’m not sold on. First, Rapunzel’s miles of hair doesn’t quite feel Sansa to me. Perhaps Ariel would be a better option (but she was already taken). Anna’s another red head, but she’s definitely a little too quirky for Sansa. Rapunzel as well is quite spirited. However, both Anna and Rapunzel are used to being pushed aside and made to feel little by others, just like Sansa. Perhaps Sansa’s quirkiness is still to come. She just hasn’t had much of a chance given the difficulties she’s faced thus far.
I think I could get behind Cinderella being such a motherly character. After her difficult childhood I think she’d fully embrace the role of mom. But given that childhood and how she was treated, I don’t think there’s any way she would have treated Jon Snow the way Catelyn did. Cinderella would have welcomed him with open arms. These two characters don’t look as similar as some of the others but looks-wise, I’m not sure who else could be Catelyn.
Aurora as Cersei
Is Aurora the bitch of the Princesses group? This would seem to suggest so. I can see the physical resemblance. The long blonde hair is perfect for Cersei. Beyond that I’m not so sure. Cersei is manipulative, but loyal and protects her children. I don’t think Aurora has a manipulative or conniving bone in her body. She’s too naive for that. At least she was during the movie. Who knows what happens once she marries Phillip and moves into the castle!
If any Disney heroine was going to take of Ygritte it would be Merida. The red hair is perfect and the mad archery skills make her dangerous, just like Ygritte. I’m curious as to how Merida would take to Jon Snow. I think a love interest would be fun for Merida.
Elsa as Daenerys
I enjoy the contrast here between Elsa’s ice and Dany’s fire. Perhaps this could be another take on ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. Elsa’s blonde locks and preference for braids definitely makes her look the part. Elsa’s frozen heart and ultimate journey of learning to love and embracing her powers is something I feel Dany has gone through. Both characters are trying to learn how to be a good queen. Another perfect match!
Do you agree with my comments? Do you have any suggestions? Has anyone done this for the Disney men? I would love to see that! Let me know in the comments.
Hello Fanboys & Fangirls! If you are a loyal follower of My Fangirl Life you will have noticed that we just took a week long hiatus. No we have not given up on blogging; we still love this site and want to continue sharing with the internet. We were just on vacation! Justine, KG & I worked hard and saved our pennies (although Canada no longer uses pennies…) so that we could have a 9 day vacation in Orlando, Florida…aka the home of DisneyWorld & The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was the most exciting & magical experience! We will definitely be writing a travel post or two about the adventure in the My Fangirl Life On Quest series (we are also blogging the trip in full on our personal blogs: Wonder & Wanderlust and Yukon Girl in the World), but today I want to talk fashion. More specific Walt Disney World fashion…because for our entire trip we were Disneybounding!
“What is Disneybound?” you ask.
Well reader, Disneybound is a popular trend started by blogger Leslie Kay. It’s well known that, while children could dress up as any character they chose, adults are not allowed to enter Disney theme parks in costume. It’s understandable. What if you’re a cosplay master & your costume is so good that visitors mistake you for a Disney Cast Member (aka employee)? And then you do something rude, inappropriate or uncouth? That would reflect poorly on the park…and Disney is all about their image! Kay found a fun way to follow the rules but still get in the Disney spirit; she created outfits made from everyday clothes but were inspired by Disney characters. Instead of making Cinderella’s dress you just pull something pretty & blue out of your closet & go! It allows you to channel the spirit of your favourite princess/hero/villain/sidekick/etc while still dressed in something that is comfortable, flattering & in your style. It’s basically closet cosplay but Disney-fied!
We spent the first day of our trip in the classic Magic Kingdom park dressed as our favourite princesses. Below are some fun pictures and details of how we achieved our looks!
Justine as Snow White
The 3 of us had no issue working out who would dress as who; there was never any overlap in characters who we wished to be. Perhaps it’s because was all have distinctly different, yet Princess-appropriate, hair colors. Or that our personalities lend themselves to separate era’s of Princess. Whatever it is, Justine is our Snow White. No question. Sweet & wide-eyed. Delicate & lady-like. Lover of birds. At one point in the day a Prince Charming even had to rescue her phone for her.
Her outfit is immediately recognizable as Snow due to the bright primary colours. Multiple people pointed out “Snow White in disguise” or “a modern day Snow White” to their children. The choice of yellow skirt & blue top is ideal to match the classic dress, but any combination of these 3 colours will be effective. As details Justine added a bird necklace and hair pin and a pretty red, lace bow. And during the parade she added some dwarves to her “accessories” list ?
Kris as Merida
Merida wasn’t my first instinct when picking a princess. Brave would definitely be the Princess movie I have seen the least amount of times. But Merida is probably the princess most like me…aka the least “classic princess”-like. And being her for the day gave me a new appreciation for how fun she really is.
The most important part of a Merida outfit is the colouring: deep green with giant red hair. I made my naturally-straight hair as big as I could by braiding it the night before. I thought it was great until a giant wave on Splash Mountain flattened it out. I matched a green Brandy Meville crop top with a pair of shorts (because we all know that a modern-day Merida would definitely pick shorts over a skirt). For accessories I added a brown leather cuff bracelet (which was actually a thin belt wrapped around and around and around) and an arrow necklace & ring. But the real key to my outfit was the perfect gold belt that KG gave to me (because she already owned it for some reason?).
KG as Rapunzel
Our resident blonde had plenty of princesses to choose from but decided to go with a fellow ENFP: Rapunzel. This meant she could be as bubbly &
annoyingly excited as she wanted while blaming it on being in character.
KG matched a pink dress with rose tights and a purple tank. These are perfect Rapunzel colours. She then strapped on a satchel (perhaps with the stolen tiara inside?) and a frying pan necklace (because you never know when you’ll need to defend yourself…or make some eggs). She finished it off with both a flower crown & flower clips in her braid. It might be overkill in real life but while Disneybounding it seemed just right!
Tell us about your Disneybound outfits in the costumes below! And your Disneybounding stories…Did anyone recognize you? Because nothing brightens you day like being called “Your Majesties” every where you go ?
Love & Luck,
Today we celebrate Kate Middleton’s 33rd birthday! Happy Birthday Kate!!
I’ve adored Kate for years now. I am a huge fan of British history, I am a huge fan of the British monarchy. I remember the Royal Wedding, I remember when George was born, I even remember when it was announced both times she was pregnant.
I am also a huge Disney fan. I’ve been to a Disney park 5 times and I can count about 50 Disney movies on my shelf right now. I love the Disney Princesses and am currently working on a number of Disney Princess cosplays.
Now I think it’s only a matter of time before Disney officially makes Kate a Disney Princess. Kate is strong, independent, educated, and dated her prince for 8 years before marriage – all things Disney is now trying to promote with the recent Princesses Tiana and Elsa. But there are a number of similarities between all Disney Princesses and I think Kate fits right in :-)There’s just one thing left: Kate, where are the birds?
Every Disney Princess has:
Gorgeous long flowing hair
Growing up I wanted Belle, Ariel or Jasmine’s hair and today I want Kate’s. How does her hair look so perfect through all the London rain? How is it always so shiny and voluminous? These are the questions I ask myself on a daily basis. It’s a serious case of hair envy.An endless wardrobe of fantastic clothes
Every Disney princess has that signature dress that every young girl wants (over 3 million Anna or Elsa dresses were sold by Disney last year!) and that dress that all the cosplayers want and are attempting to sew. It is my dream to make Belle’s yellow gown. Kate got this too when she became a princess. Her wardrobe is classy and sophisticated and I love it all. She’s one of my style icons. I just wish I had her wardrobe budget. Their own Prince Charming
The Disney Princesses all have a Disney Prince, it’s a simple formula that has worked for Disney for years (except Merida, but that’s essentially the point of Brave and Elsa, but she’s technically a Queen anyways). Kate lucked out here and scored (arguably) the Most Eligible Prince in the World. It’s a perfect love story. It’d make a perfect Disney movie. Will and Kate are the most adorably cute perfect couple. Just as cute as Anna & Kristoff, Jasmine & Aladdin and Rapunzel & Eugene
A special bond with animals, usually birds.
Ariel has flounder, Jasmine has Raja, Rapunzel has Pascal and then there are so many birds. Why can Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White communicate with birds? The birds are always singing with them, helping them dress, helping them clean, impersonating Princes, helping them fight the villains and generally just being their best friend. I admit, I’m a little jealous. As a graduate student who spends her days analyzing data relating to birds I think this relationship could be very beneficial. Plus, who doesn’t want to hold out their hand and have a little chickadee land in it?
And this brings us to the one thing Kate is lacking. I’ve searched the internet and there are no photos showing a special bond between Kate and a group of songbirds. This is the final thing needed in officially becoming a Disney Princess. Can’t you just imagine Kate walking through Kensington Garden with a flock of little tits or sparrows. It’d be adorable. And with a new baby on the way I imagine some songbirds would be helpful in cleaning the palace they live in.
Will and Kate have had Lupo for years and I’d like to think this is the first step.
Let us know how you’re celebrating in the comments!
