My Fangirl Life is a geek lifestyle blog, or that’s how we describe ourselves. This means that we love to talk about every aspect of life as a nerd: from cosplay, Cons, & entertainment to cooking, fashion, & DIY. Today’s topic, Geek Decorating, falls squarely into the middle of all of that.
How does a nerd-girl decorate her room? You might imagine boy band poster wallpaper. Or maybe a wall of mint-condition collectibles, still in their boxes. While these are both legitimate options, it is also possible for geek decorating to still look “normal” and classy. Sure the fangirl touches in my room aren’t always subtle, but I think I’ve created a great space that mixes fun & function, nerd & trend, and fangirl & fashion. That’s why I am doing this bedroom tour: to inspire and hopefully give you a few ideas of how to nerd out, without letting it take over. You’ll notice a common theme through my bedroom: books & photos. There are books everywhere, stacked on most every surface. And I love to be surrounded by the things & people I love, even if it’s only in photograph form. This mix is in full force on one of the main focal points of the room: my bookshelf (although it is paritally hidden by that odd outcrop I affectionate refer to as “the nook”). It would take a entire post to go through everything on that bookshelf, so I made one. You can find photos, ideas, and decorating tips in Geek Decorating: My Geektastic Bedroom Bookshelf.
Books are a beautiful decoration. Because they are so “functional” you might not think of them as decor, but I know it’s the shelves & piles of novels scattered around my room that give it such a comfortable feel. Some are lined up nicely on the shelf, as if I live in a library. Others are featured based on their importance in my life. The Harry Potter novels are accentuated by my wand (actually Krum’s wand) and some wizarding sweet-wrappers (all from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando). I love to pair books up with knick-knacks that “match”, whether it’s in size, color or theme. Then there are the books that are just there to prop up candles, lamps, etc…that is until I pull them out for another read!
I am a victim of terrific wanderlust. I always want to be off on a new adventure. To tide me over when I am at home I like to decorate using photos & mementos from my trips. Not particularly nerdy… until it turns into a Britophile paradise. My favorite city I have visited (and the one I desperately want to return to) is London, and London is seeped into all corners of my room. From my various London-themed art to the ample Doctor Who decoration, any Brit would feel at home (or overwhelmed…). The picture of the TARDIS in Mordor was a birthday gift from KG. My mom knit the 4th Doctor scarf for me because she is amazing. And, if you look carefully, you’ll find a pretty extensive collection of pictures with cast members who have visted local comic conventions (extensive includes Matt Smith, Karen Gilland, Arthur Darvill, John Barrowman & Jenna Coleman).
But I don’t only pay homage to the Whovian fandom. Here are a few others that find representation amoung my nerdy bedroom decor:
– Disney: My windowsill is a shrine to childhood dreams with a ‘vintage’ Neverland travel poster (from Etsy shop TeacupPiranha), a Flounder stuffy, and a fork I stole from the Be Our Guest restaurant at Disney World.
– TMNT: Despite being an “adult” I cannot let go off my Michelangeo. He used to come everywhere with me as a kid. Now he perches on a chest (British themed… of course) full of letters, photos & other memories.
– Harry Potter: Michelangelo’s best friend is a bear named Oliver… yes, after Oliver Wood. I also have a Cupboard Under the Stairs travel poster (also from TeacupPiranha).
– Zombie Apocalypse: In case of world-ending emergencies I have easy access to my bow (con-safe, so not actually functional… it’s made of hangers & paper mache) and my army helmet (purchased at a thrift store for the Apocalypse Photoshoot).
Now get out there and decorate! And be sure to let us know in the comments if you’d like to see more room tours or geek decorating ideas (You can see KG’s room tour here). If you have any of your own decor tips or pics to share you can find us on Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr.
Love & Luck,
