Kris introduced our “Fangirl Playlists” feature last month with Longing for Adventure, and today I’m going to add to it by bringing you Your Best Breakup Soundtrack.
Breakups are pretty much the worst, but you can work your way through them with good friends, ice cream, and, of course, the perfect playlist. All you need to do is get through the 5 Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Not an easy task, but I guess that’s why breakups are so hard. And once all that is over, you’ll be able to move on and take on your future. Read on for a playlist to mirror your progress:
This is the first reaction after the breakup… and it can typically be accompanied by shock and confusion. At this point, your heart doesn’t really believe that it is over. You might even think about what that relationship could still be.
1.What Do You Mean? – Justin Bieber
2. My Happy Ending – Avril Lavigne
You might be angry at your ex, yourself, your friends, the world… pretty much anything. But at this point in the grieving process you are just angry. You might even write a song about it
3. Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were) – The Veronicas
4. Don’t – Ed Sheeran
5. Son of A – Mackenzie Porter
This is the part where you still try to find ways to make the relationship work. You might talk to your ex, or maybe just to yourself or your friends. You try to negotiate.
6. Half A Heart – One Direction
7. Far Away – Nickelback
8. Can’t Have You – Jonas Brothers
This is the saddest part of the cycle. The hopelessness, the tiredness, and the lack of belief in any kind of future. Keep pushing through, though!
7. Last Kiss – Taylor Swift
8. Incomplete – Backstreet Boys
9. Amnesia – 5 Seconds of Summer
At this point can finally look back and accept that your relationship is over. Acceptance might creep in slowly, but you will start to plan for your future and see possibilities in it. There might still be sadness – there might always be some sadness – but you can start to move forward.
10. I Remember Everything – Daisy Mallory
11. Broken Ones – Jacquie Lee
12. Miss Movin’ On – Fifth Harmony
And this is when you have made it through the 5 stages and finally do start to fully move on… perhaps not quite with a new relationship, but you don’t need one. You’re good to just dance the night away with your squad.
12. Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys
13. New Romantics – Taylor Swift
14. Me & My Girls – Fifth Harmony
What do you think? What else would you include on this list? Share in the comments!
Have you ever checked what embarrassing things live in your Google Search History? You should. I promise you it is worth your while… a horrifying yet hilarious experience. I recently scrolled through the last 4 years of my internet life and found it a thoroughly accurate glimpse into who I am… which obviously meant I needed to share it with all of you. I’m not going to share the entire list (it would mean a lot of sifting through junk to find the humour) but I will give you a taste of the highs & lows, the “so very me” searches and the queries that are oh-so-embarrassing (not like that… get your mind out of the gutter!). And, at the end, I’ll give you quick ‘How To’ for getting your own search history list!
I am a curious person. It means that I Google a lot. Sometimes it’s “What are basketballs made of?“. Other times it’s “Fun Dinosaur Facts“. I always looking to learn. Some other totally legit inquiries include:
Some of my searches seem pretty random but have perfectly reasonable explanations:
Then other times I have absolutely no excuse for searching something, like my most embarrassing search: “How to take a screenshot on a Mac“. Why is it embarrassing? you ask. It seems perfectly normal. It’s not the search itself; it’s the fact that I’ve searched it at least 12 time in the last 4 years. You think I’d remember!?!?! (P.S. I Googled how to take a screenshot on a Mac AGAIN for the pictures at the end of this post.)
But I know what you’re really wondering about are my fandom searches; the questions that show I’m a real fangirl. A few of my favourites include:
And sometimes I get stuck on one fandom in particular… as the writer of Tuesday Walk of Shame this can often be The Bachelor. I have to do research for my posts; asking hard-hitting questions like:
Although if I’m getting over-involved in anything there is good chance it’s gonna be One Direction. I am apparently really nosy about 1D (And we won’t even talk about the multiple times there is just an image search for “Louis Tomlinson” with nothing related surrounding it).
But perhaps the weirdest obsession I have is searching how tall people are. Not just One Direction but everyone and any one: Harry Styles – Luke Hemmings – Tom Cruise – Taylor Swift – and my all time favourite:
But I promised a ‘How To‘! I’m sure at this point you are bursting with curiosity as to what your best searches of all time are. Here’s how you do it:
It’s that easy! Happy browsing & let me know some of your best queries are in the comments!
Love & Luck,
The My Fangirl Life team has a multitude of concerts scheduled this summer. Edmonton is apparently a mecca for some of the biggest acts in music this season, so keep watch as we document the shows we attend for your reading pleasure – we’re calling it our “Summer of Concerts”. You can also check out our reviews of Maroon 5, Eric Church, Phillip Phillips, OneRepublic, Ed Sheeran, Shania Twain, and (gloriously!) One Direction. And today, the one-and-only band of boys (because they aren’t a boyband… and yet they are): 5 Seconds of Summer
For us here at My Fangirl Life, going to a 5 Seconds of Summer concert was a roller coaster of emotions. First came excitement. 5SoS was coming to Edmonton! Admittedly, we were only excited because none of the other 8 acts we saw this year had been announced yet; we were excited anyone was coming to our northern city. At that point we were pretty low on the 5SoS Fandom intensity scale. I had written a Listen & Learn about their first album, already late to the game, then continued to listen to their songs without putting much thought into the band behind the music. But we did know enough to snap up tickets; it was a show we were bound to enjoy, right?
As summer progressed, and we attended concert after concert, thoughts of 5SoS got lost in the shuffle. After all, their show was near the end and only a week after our much anticipated One Direction show. Eeeeeeek! Poor 5 Seconds of Summer, living in One Direction’s shadow, despite being a very different thing… but then again they owe 1D EVERYTHING so they probably don’t mind. One Direction came & went… and it was the best night of our lives. 5 Seconds of Summer would surely be a letdown after that. How could it not be?
As a now-dedicated member of the 5 Seconds of Summer Family it pains me to share with you all that a short time ago I was not that excited to be attending one of their concerts. Frankly it’s an embarrassing confession. So why am I telling you? So that you’ll understand just how truthful I am being when I say 5SoS Rocked. My. World. I was not a dedicated fangirl who arrived hours early for the show, spent all of her hard-earned money on floor tickets and stalked the merchandise booths for gear with the boys’ faces on it (this was me, however, at 1D ?). Those girls would have enjoyed the show no matter what. No, I was a regular fan of the band… and if I have to explain to you the difference between a fan & a fangirl, what are you even doing on this blog? (Just Kidding! Don’t leave! Check out our Fangirl Glossary for the distinction!). Because of this, you can trust my opinion to be a little more impartial. And impartially I tell you that with one concert, 5SoS drew me out of my seat, on to my feet and straight into the fandom.
I know what you’re thinking: “What exactly was it that converted you Kris?”. Thanks for asking, Reader! It was a combination of many things! Not least of all was the band itself. Has 5 Seconds of Summer ever grown up in the last year! And they must have been drinking the same mystical water 1D was feeding on, because they are now magically hot. KG & Justine, who had come in with no prior affinity to any one member of the band, were blown away by what a hunk Luke had become. For myself, his sick beats & manbun cemented Ashton at the top of my list. There’s just something about a drummer guys… and that smile… Anyways, it wasn’t just their looks that wowed us. 5 Seconds of Summer also sounded amazing live. Crisp and clean (in a grungy pop-punk way, of course), while killing it on their respective instruments. Them boys can play! ?
The show itself was simple. The stage had some light effects and movement, but the focus was on the boys themselves. And they killed it. A very charismatic group of men. They had the crowd on their feet, rocking out with their socks out (Get it? Because the tour was named the “Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour”!). Well mostly everyone was… there was a grumpy pair of mothers behind us who sat the whole time giving us judgy looks. Yes, I’m a grown woman. And yes, I love 5SoS. Got a problem with that?
What really amazed me about the show was the trust the band had in their fans and how the arena full of screaming girls did not disappoint. I have never seen a band hold out the microphone for the crowd to sing as often as 5SoS did in Edmonton’s Rexall Place. And every single time they were met with a perfectly clear, incredibly loud recital of their lyrics back at them. The crowd knew every word (obviously… even I knew almost every word & I was only at “fan” status). It was mesmerizing & enchanting. I was proud of the teenage girls of my hometown. They were singing with the best of ’em.
But just how good was the show? I’ll quantify it using My Fangirl Life’s handy fangirl-appropriate rating system. Here’s my rating for a 5 Seconds of Summer concert:
9 out of 10 Feels: ?ﾟﾎﾤ?ﾟﾒﾃ?ﾟﾔﾥ?￢ﾜﾊ☺️⚪️
Conclusion: Next time perhaps I will be “a dedicated fangirl who arrived hours early for the show, spent all of her hard earned money on floor tickets and stalked the merchandise booths for gear with the boys’ faces on it” because I am hooked. I can guarantee I’ll be at any 5 Seconds of Summer concert I am faced with in the future. Nice work 5SoS. You’ve converted me. I’m your fangirl now.
Love & Luck,
This summer sure flew by, didn’t it? August is waning & September is charging towards us at break-neck speed. And with it comes plenty of change: School. Cool weather. Classes. Packing away our beloved shorts. And snow… if you live as far north as I do. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE autumn. It is accompanied by so many wonderful things: Boots! Tea! Pretty coloured leaves! Sweaters! Pumpkin Spice Lattes! But also so much structure. After months of exploits in the sun, where days are long and nights are warm, autumn is awfully confining. Even now that I don’t have school to return to I still feel the walls closing in. It’s change but it’s not necessarily the type that brings excitement. It makes me restless.
I don’t know about you, by my mood tends to color most everything in my life. It changes the way I write, what I wear, and how I spend my time. But I’m not sure there’s a more obvious way to tell how I’m feeling than to look at my current playlist. Lately my unsettled nature is creeping into my iTunes Library and creating a playlist longing for freedom and change, for something new, for an adventure…of any sort. Travel. Love. Challenge. Anything. As I assume this is a common sentiment at this time of year I decided to share my current eclectic mix. Blast these tracks through your speakers on one last Summer Roadtrip before starting a new semester. Or, if you’re already back in class, pump these tunes as an escape from the confinement of school… or work… just find an adventure…
Fangirl Playlist: Longing for Adventure
1. Stay Alive – Jose Gonzalez
Get inspired … “We’ll do whatever just to stay alive”
2. Believe – Mumford & Sons
3. Ready to Run – One Direction
This was voted My Fangirl Life’s #1 2015 Road Trip Song.
4. Go Big or Go Home – American Authors
I believe in a strong, early build to a playlist. Get pumped.
5. Tear In My Heart – twenty one pilots
6. Scar Tissue – Red Hot Chili Peppers
And then a ‘fall’; every playlist needs a fall in the middle. Unless it’s Barney’s ‘Get Psyched Mix’.
7. California – Phantom Planet
A must for any O.C. Fangirl.
8. Freedom – Pharrell Williams
The name is a little ‘on-the-nose’ but the song is good.
9. Run Away With Me – Carly Rae Jepsen
10. Ship to Wreck – Florence + the Machine
11. Fire & Gold – Bea Miller
This song makes me want my adventure to be changing the world.
12. Drag Me Down – One Direction
13. Fly Away – 5 Seconds of Summer
Oh 5SoS, how did you know this was exactly the song I needed right now to describe exactly how I’m feeling?
14. I Lived – OneRepublic
15. Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
Let me know where you’re listening to these tracks. Or if you have something else that would add to the playlist!
Love & Luck,
Yesterday KG & Johnny Rico came up with a list of What Fictional Character Should Replace Zayn in 1D?. It was totally legit. There were some exceptional choices. Can’t you just imagine Prince Hans getting down on-stage with Harry, or chilling out backstage with Liam? Or how about dancing Baby Groot out clubbing with Louis? Or Khal Drogo invading Nando’s with Niall?
The unfortunate thing is that, as perfect as these substitutions would be, they could never happen. Unless they invented a machine to make fictional characters real (which is something I can guarantee every fangirl would purchase!), these beloved potential pop stars will not be able to take the stage. But never fear, Kris is here to offer some possible (or dare I say plausible?) stand-ins for Zayn. Here is my list of Non-Fictional (aka Real People with Real Singing Careers) Replacements for Zayn in 1D, were they to choose to have one. I mean, I would be reluctant to take on a new 5th member after being spurned by the last one.
I don’t mean any offence to 5 Seconds of Summer (I have expressed my liking for them in the past) but aren’t they basically One Direction’s farm team? I imagined them being fostered as potential future replacements all along. So isn’t a 5SoS member being asked to join 1D kind of like being called up from the minors to the big leagues? And Calum is the obvious Zayn replacement choice. He has the most soul and fixes the diversity issue that Zayn leaving created.
Hunter Hayes is adorable and sexy and has a voice like an angel. Sound like anyone else you know? He is a natural fit for this collection of supermodel-esque singers. Ok he isn’t British. Instead he’s country, which would be an exciting new direction for One Direction to go… I do love their folkier tunes. The main downside would be that his addition to the band would probably divide the Niall fanbase. How would you ever pick who “the cute one” is between the two of them?
With Zayn gone, One Direction is missing their resident “bad boy”. And let’s be honest, as hard as any of the others try, none of the existing and members will ever be able to fill that title. They could be in prison and would still be too innocent looking to pull off the bad boy image. Who is the baddest boy around to bring in? John Mayer. Obvi. This match-up would have the added bonus of exposing an older generation to 1D’s music and John Mayer to a new generation of girls to sleep with (which is obviously an advantage for him… not for the girls).
Perhaps Joe is feeling nostalgic for his boy band days? With his solo career flatlining he must miss the success of the Jonas Brothers. Getting in with 1D would bring him back up to (and past) his peak. He could bring the last generation of boy band fans to 1D’s ever expanding fandom and could finally catch up to his little brother. Because, let’s be honest, Nick has ALWAYS been the most accomplished Jonas.
This suggestion is heavenly to some and blasphemous to others, but no matter what side of the debate you are on you have to admit that you would have included him on your list too. It’s the most obvious suggestion… even Bieber knows it. While I think this would be a horrible (HORRIBLE) choice (1D does not need arrests on their records), it would provide an epic addition of hysterical girls to the already constantly-hyperventilating Directioners.
What do you think? Who would you have substitute in as the 5th member of 1D (were they to choose to have one again)? Let us know in the comments!
Love & Luck,
I ended my last post, where I reviewed 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut album while presenting facts about the band, by saying I’d unfortunately reached the end of the album…but that was a LIE! I purchased the Extended Edition, and if you are wondering if it is worth it, it is.
BONUS Track #1 – Social Casualty
This song takes me back to Jr High School when I first discovered Green Day. Although it has a healthy dose of pop over Green Day’s Minority, I’m all up for encouraging a little rebellion against the norm in today’s teens. This is a stellar way to start off the Bonus Tracks. This was worth the extra $2
BONUS 5SoS Fact #1: Luke
Luke Hemmings – Lead Vocals/Guitar
Born: July 16, 1996
– Is apparently the most responsible, eats the most and gives the best hugs
– Said to be “the next Harry Styles”…which basically means he’s a hunk-in-training
BONUS Track #2 – Never Be
The pose of the lyrics is quite lovely & magical. It’s inspirational “live while we’re young” (to quote 1D) message is rearranged with a unique approach. Teens, take note and take advantage of your free & innocent years. Adults, take note and don’t let go of your Peter Pan never-grow-up mentality.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #2: Michael
Michael Clifford – Guitarist
Born: November 20, 1995
– Is the sassiest member of the band
– Check out that hair…seriously check it out. It’s different in every picture.
BONUS Track #3 – Voodoo Doll
*Yawn* This was my least favorite song of the album. I just wasn’t feeling the beat, the melody or the lyrics. Sorry 5SoS but I could have done without this one, especially compared to the rock hits included on the main record.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #3: Album Sales
5SoS’s debut album saw 115,000 preorders and surged to #1 on the iTunes charts the instant it was released.
BONUS Track #4 – Greenlight
One more pop-punk anthem for good measure. This is going to make me sound super lame, but I enjoy the good morals on this record. Sure the protagonist of Good Girl is sneaking out of the house, but she’s also smart, independent & is going to get into Harvard. Yes the boys are trying to get with the girl in End Up Here but they also see her worth & give her respect. And here in Greenlight there is sexually flirtatious vibe going on, but the chorus is all about asking for permission to make a move. So many songs these days make women out to be objects, but 5SoS is sending a message to their young female fans that they like strong women.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #4: Oprah
Luke has Oprah Winfreys phone number saved in his phone. Not sure how he got it but that’s pretty cool.
BONUS Track #5 – Mrs All American (On North American Release)
5SoS, you dogs. Look at you pandering to the international crowd with country specific bonus material. I find the title ‘Mrs All American’ kind of clunky & unflattering…not like the coveted & dainty Miss America…but I appreciate the effort. And the ‘Nananananana’ part is my favorite gibberish lyrics of the album.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #5: Calum
Calum Hood – Bassist
Born: January 25, 1996
– Calum is the most active songwriter of the group.
– Mint Chocolate Chip is his favorite ice cream flavor
BONUS Track #6 – English Love Affair (On UK Release)
The beat catches your attention right off the top. Do you think 5SoS purposely made the UK song more rock-heavy than the pop-centric All American track? Are Brits just more hardcore than us North Americans? I’m unfortunately having to lump myself in with the USA because there’s no “My Canadian Princess” or similar song. It’s extra unfortunate because I prefer this area-specific exclusive.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #6: Ashton
Ashton Irwin – Drummer
Born: July 7, 1994
– Before he joined the band he’d seen 5SOS on YouTube & thought they were douche
– He hates ducks
BONUS Track #7 – Lost Boy (On Australian Release)
A fun song, but I’m still holding my position that the UK Bonus track is the best.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #7: Fan
I’m hooked. It’s official: I have joined the 5SoS Fam & you should too.
Now we’ve actually reached the end L But seriously…on repeat…for the next 3 months… I wonder how long it will take before I can pick out each of their vocals?
Love & Luck,
Check out Part One of this post (with the standard release material)! And if you’d like a copy of the individual lyrics graphics I’ll have them all posted on my tumblr.
