Welcome to another installment of your favourite My Fangirl Life series: I Ship That. Here we will discuss our ships, your ships, or just any ships we want to talk about. Ron and Hermione? Sure. Dany and Jon? Yes!! Outlaw Queen? Absolutely. Kris and cheese? Why not! Tune in to this series for discussions on all of our favourite ships (Today I’m discussing most of the cast of Girl Meets World: Riley and Lucas and Maya) – maybe some of them are yours too! If you’re not sure what a “ship” is you can find the definition in our Fangirl Glossary!
I’ve done it. I’ve found another legitimate love triangle! As some of you may already know, I have very strong opinions about how love triangles are stupid and barely even real… which I’ve written about before in Why Love Triangles Are Stupid (And Barely Even Real). I won’t go into too many details here as you can check out the post if you’re interested, but basically my rationale is that what is typically referred to as a “Love Triangle” should actually be called a “Love V”, since two of the members of the triangle don’t usually connect to one another. I can think of very few examples of legitimate love triangles, but Riley and Lucas and Maya from Girl Meets World are certainly one.
I was so all-in on Riley and Lucas from the very beginning. In fact, I still am. But as it turns out I’m also into Lucas and Maya and, probably most of all, into Riley and Maya.
Riley and Lucas seemed perfect for each other from the start. As soon as they met, I could see their whole lives stretching out ahead of them, walking in the footsteps of everyone’s #relationshipgoals couple, Cory and Topanga. From being shy and adorable in the halls of their middle school, to attending prom together, to being loving parents Riley and Lucas would just make sense.
But then Maya happened. Well, to be accurate, Maya happened to Riley first. Their friendship has stood the test of time, and these young women are incredibly good for each other. They push each other’s boundaries and support one another through every trial that comes their way. Even the most difficult trial of all: falling in love with the same boy.
Lucas and Maya snuck up on all of us, and when thinking about how similar Riley and Lucas are, I can see why Maya would fall for this guy. At the start, Maya squashed down any feelings she may have had because Riley liked Lucas so much. And when these feelings (and the feelings that Lucas obviously has for her, on top of those for Riley) started to bubble to the surface, the true love triangle emerged. Riley then worked to push her feelings for Lucas aside because she wanted Maya to have her chance to be happy.
Once all of the feelings came out, each member of this little triangle cared so much about the other two that they weren’t willing to make a choice. Though this is making things difficult for the group right now, it just goes to show how strong all of these relationships are. And I certainly ship all of it… I want them to hang out in one happy little love triangle forever and ever… though I’m not so sure the writers of this show will go for that. I’m not sure exactly what is going to play out here, but I know that these three will all put each other first.
Which ship are you on? Riley and Lucas? Maya and Lucas? Riley and Maya? All three? Yeah, I’m with you! Let’s chat in the comments.
Cheers,
KG
