Hello all! If you haven’t seen The Martian (and I’m sure most of you have…this review is really late), you definitely should. To me, The Martian is one of those rare and perfect movies that you hope you get the chance to see. For quite some time now I’ve been going to movies, feeling rather let down after the credits roll (other than the perfection that was Star Wars). The odd part about it though, is that I’m not someone who normally complains about movies. I’m a movie buff, but as of late, it’s felt as all these current movies have been missing that spark, that “it” factor or whatever you want to call it that makes it magical. The Martian has all that, and let me tell you why. As per the My Fangirl Life Spoiler Guide, Minor Spoilers involved in this review, but nothing more than what you see in the trailer!
1) It’s Scientifically Correct
Alright, other than a few points at which you need to suspend some disbelief, this movie is incredibly accurate. Even the MythBusters Jamie and Adam have praised the book and movie on its accuracy. The directors and writers of the screenplay and script even consulted NASA to ensure the science was true fact.
Point: This is pretty real life.
2) It’s a survival story
In case you didn’t realize, The Martian is about a man being left behind on Mars, ALONE, for a really long time. And he has to figure out how to make water, grow food… and yeah… not die.
One of the biggest hurdles Watney has to overcome in the movie, is figure out how to grow his own potatoes. He Macgyvers the heck out of some Martian soil and is actually successful at growing some plants. Pretty darn amazing.
3) It’s funny
For a movie dealing with a man left on Mars, you’d imagine it to be quite bleak. Quite the opposite actually. While it has its moments of melancholy, something that sets this movie apart is its humour. It’s genuinely a very funny movie. I would imagine that it’s Watney’s sense of humour during situations of impossible stress that kept him alive. He never gave up, and never stopped laughing.
I’m gonna have to science the shit out of this – Mark Watney
4) The crew
Another great part of the movie is Watney’s crew. Even though they’re missing from sections of the movie, we learn things about them through Watney’s experience on Mars. They feel like a tight knit family that really love and care for one another. Their wit, humour and constant teasing are some of the highlights. You can watch a funny clip HERE that takes place before the movie and gives you some insight into their relationships.
5) The book is amazing
Now this is something I find genuinely cool. The author, Andy Weir, is a regular guy. He wrote The Martian for fun, and published it for free, by chapter on his website. His fans started asking him to put it in a downloadable format, and he did, for the low price of 99 cents. Eventually it caught wind and became the hype it is today. The truly interesting thing to me about Andy Weir is that he heavily researched all the science involved within the story. As a programmer, he designed programs that would assess each situation Watney would get into, and tested to see if Watney would survive. That’s an author that is extremely dedicated to giving his readers a story that is as authentic as humanly possible.
If you haven’t watched The Martian yet, I highly recommend it! And if you have, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Ciao for now,
