Last Tuesday was an ultra exciting day on television. We were graced with the mid-season premiere of Pretty Little Liars – with the intriguing #5YearsForward jump – and the series premiere of Shadowhunters, the new series based on Cassandra Clare’s book series The Mortal Instruments. Obviously we are obsessed with both of these fandoms and as the good fangirls we are, we’re dedicating an entire week to discussing these thrilling television debuts. Welcome to PLL/Shadowhunters Week on My Fangirl Life!
Today is the final day of our PLL/Shadowhunters festivities (but don’t worry, we love to write about these topics so I’m sure more content will be coming your way soon). We’ve spent the week discussing everything about these shows, from forbidden love and how nice guys finish last in teen fiction, to ways to dress like your favourite characters and what modern TV theme songs would make up an actual good playlist. On the more ridiculous end, we also talked about ways that Ezra Fitz and Magnus Bane are basically the same character, and we presented some extremely out there Pretty Little Liars theories. We even shared a review of the first two episodes of Shadowhunters. It’s been a magical week which I am going to finish off by rounding up and discussing all of my favourite new mysteries that have been presented in the first Pretty Little Liars 5 Years Forward episode.
Pretty Little Liars mysteries are probably the reason I watch the show… and, you know, to make fun of the ridiculously unrealistic and stupid things the girls often do (Why do they always go investigating in creepy places at night? Why do they always split up? And why do they never call the police? – but these are all questions for another day). With the debut of the 5 Years Forward concept, a whole slew of new Pretty Little Liars mysteries have come our way, and I’m here to discuss some of them with you.
According to our Spoiler Guide, I need to let you know that spoilers are ahead for the most recent episode, “Of Late I Think of Rosewood”. Stop reading if you haven’t seen it yet!
Mystery #1 – What happened to Emily’s dad?
During the episode, we see Emily touch a banner with a star on it outside her family home. With some research online (I am Canadian), I found out that this is reserved for families that lost someone in active service specifically. But the real question here is what was Wayne doing in active service with his heart condition? Seems fishy to me…
Mystery #2 – Who is Toby building the house for?
I touched on this topic on my previous post, 9 Big Predictions for Pretty Little Liars 5 Years Forward, and that is still my favourite theory so far, though it is highly unlikely. My other favourite idea is one that I came across on the Previously TV Pretty Little Liars forum: what if Toby is building the house for Caleb because they’re together now? BEST. THING. EVER. Just think about it – little nuggets of information about them still being in touch have been dropped, but in an almost secretive way. That being said, I think the most likely case is that Toby is still on the Spencer train (yawn).
Mystery #3 – What is up with Spencer and Caleb?
Though I am a huge fan of Coby (or so I’m dubbing the Caleb & Toby ship), it’s probably not actually the case, so I can get on board with Spaleb. There’s clearly something going on between these two, but is it just as friends or is it something more? I personally hope it is more than that – but I hope they are very delicate when they let Hanna know (or Toby…. in case he’s building that house for Caleb and Caleb doesn’t know it…). I don’t particularly want to deal with watching Hanna work through all the issues she has after murdering Spencer over breaking the girl code.
Mystery #4 – Is Emily on drugs?
Throughout the episode, Emily is shown with prescription pills in her purse, and at one point you can see what looks to be syringes. Is she going down the addict route? Perhaps, but dig a little deeper into this and we can uncover some interesting ways the story could go. When Spencer asks Emily about the Salk Institute, and mentions that she wants to tour it sometime, Emily rattles off a half-baked response about how they aren’t doing tours right now and then clams up. For those that aren’t aware, the Salk Institute is for biological studies. Emily’s response (and the fact that we saw her bartending at the beginning of the episode) makes me wonder whether she might be a patient (lab rat?) at this institute instead? Did she inherit her dad’s heart condition? Is she undergoing some sort of trial treatment for a medical condition?
Mystery #5 – How did Ashley end up in charge at Radley?
I love that Radley has become a classy joint now… even though that seems a little creepy overall after what the girls have gone through there. Regardless, I’m interested to know how Ashley came to run the place, in what capacity she does so, and where she got the money to do this (drastic) remodel. Does she have some sort of mysterious investor? Did she get this place the same way that Ezra ended up owning The Brew (aka we don’t know how…)? I just have so many questions!
Mystery #6 – What happened to Ezra’s girlfriend in South America?
You might say “duh – she was kidnapped by revolutionaries!”. But to that I say: doesn’t this seem like a story that should be discussed further? And one that should come into play at some point later? I’m putting money on Nicole returning eventually, probably right after Aria and Ezra get back together.
Mystery #7 – Did Ella ever get out of the basement?
Ok… so this maybe isn’t a burning question for the new season, but Ella was the only Wine Mom to not appear in “Of Late I Think of Rosewood”. Why?!? Where is she? Is she ok??? And more importantly, when is the #WineMoms pilot coming out? I would binge-watch that SO HARD.
Mystery #8 – Who was watching the Liars outside Charlotte’s funeral?
There was a mysterious figure in a vehicle with tinted windows outside the funeral. Is this an Uber A? Jenna? Someone else? Who’s got their eyes on the Liars now? I want to know!
Mystery #9 – What happened to Charlotte and why was she holding a purple rose?
What was Charlotte doing out of the house, and how did she die? Did the purple rose mean anything at all? Flowers have been connected with Jessica Dilaurentis throughout the series – maybe this has something to do with her mother or her mother’s death? Perhaps one of the Liars killed her (it seems that Aria looks guilty in next week’s episode), or perhaps this was an Uber A tying up loose ends once Charlotte was free. Or maybe it was Mona. I wouldn’t put it past diabolical Mona who quickly swung her testimony the opposite way from what was expected to help Charlotte get out of the mental hospital.
Mystery #10 – What did the girls do to Sara Harvey?
This seems to be the new “The Jenna Thing” for this season. Judging from what we found out in this episode, something happened to Sara at Radley after Emily’s epic punch. Did the bomb go off and leave her injured because the girls just left her there? That doesn’t seem like something they should feel guilty for (after all, Sara and Charlotte were responsible for the bomb in the first place). Did something else happen after the confrontation with Charlotte? I’m sure we will soon find out what this was all about.
What Pretty Little Liars mysteries are you most intrigued about? Which ones did I miss? Let’s discuss in the comments!
