It’s Star Wars Week here on My Fangirl Life (and literally everywhere else in the world), where we celebrate the release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Join us every day as we discuss the new movie, the old movies, and plenty of general Star Wars fun!
Guys. Seriously. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is so good. I don’t even know how to review it, it’s so good. It’s so good all I can do is keep saying “It’s so good”. As I know everyone is determined to stay spoiler free I am going to give you a review that will not ruin anything for the movie… I am also going to do more of a reaction because, let’s face it, I could say the movie was garbage and you’d still see it. It’s Star Wars, aka required viewing for all nerds. But don’t worry… it isn’t garbage… It’s so good.
So rather than say what I liked (all of it) and didn’t (nothing… it’s so good) about the film, here is a preparation for all of the feels you will feel during your first (and probably second, third, forth, and four hundredth) viewing of The Force Awakens.
And don’t worry, I am only talking about feelings, not actual events/people/etc. There will be no spoilers. New Star Wars is one of those things that are sacred (like Game of Thrones, as discussed in our Spoiler Guide). I understand the need to be unspoiled; I would never have forgiven anyone who had ruined it for me.
😊 Excited Anticipation 😊
The time is drawing near. You are on your way to the theater to see the next installment in the Star Wars franchise. Or, if you’re me, you have been at the theater for 14 hours watching the first 6 films in marathon form (check out our live blog experience to see what the day was like). It’s been a decade since there was a new Star Wars movie. We’ve been waiting over 3 decades for the continuation of the story. How can you not feel overwhelmed with anticipation? In my case this manifested as nervous leaping, random flailing, and not being able to breathe.
😣 Nervousness 😣
And now the film is about to begin. You haven’t let yourself even entertain the possibility that it will be bad. After the prequel series, another bad movie might kill your favorite franchise. But now it is so close… what if it doesn’t live up to your expectations? What if they ruin beloved characters? Or get the universe wrong? What if? What if? What if? How can you not be wracked with anxiety when your favorite films are on the line? Don’t worry, this reaction is natural and does not make you a fair-weather fan. Also, don’t worry because The Force Awakens is so good.
😅 Utterly Gleeful 😅
And the music starts and those fateful words appear on the screen… “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…” All of the fear is gone (which is good because we all know it leads to the dark side!) and all you can feel is elated. It’s here! It’s really here! The words start scrolling (and in 3D!) and you are locked in for hours, immersed in your happiest of places: Star Wars.
👍 Impressed 👍
You will be impressed by a lot of things. Not even taking into account the plot or the characters, the movie is beautiful. The settings are gorgeous. The costuming is spot on. The droids and various creatures look too real to even consider anything else. The effects are seamless. You believe whole-heartedly in the force. And the score is everything you have come to expect from John Williams and these films. Take it all in. Be greedy with your eyes and your ears. Because it’s so good.
😎 The Ultimate Adrenaline Rush 😎
This film is jam-packed. If I’m being honest, I took a little nap in Episode IV during my marathon. There is so much set-up at the start of that trilogy that it can drag a bit at time… but not in this one! The fight scenes are on point. The battle sequences are “to die for”. And the plot/characters/everything has your heart racing… or maybe that’s just left over from the pre-movie anticipation… The Force Awakens is a Star Wars movie for Star Wars fans. It is so good.
😌 Nostalgic 😌
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It can ignite passion in fans… but it can also pull something new down. Episode VII has nailed the ratio of the two. There is enough Original Trilogy (& Prequel too, but less so due to timelines) to get you hooked. It reminds you of the good times you’ve had in the past. It plays on your desire to keep the beloved stories of all-time favorite characters going. But The Force Awakens also introduces new planets, people, and ideas that propel the story forward into something totally new. The Old helps reel you in and guide you along, but the New is so compelling that you stop relying on it so much! Oh, and after watching a ‘six movies immediately proceeding each other’ marathon I feel totally qualified to tell you that there are quite a few minor but adorable callbacks to earlier movies that true fans will love.
✊ Empowered ✊
The new characters are amazing. Seriously Team, I love them all. There is something very empowering about new characters stealing the screen from old favorites. It gives you hope in the future. It lets you know that the Star Wars franchise will be not only alright but will flourish. And it tells you that the movie is, in fact, so good. Plus there is a strong female lead in Rey that will be a great role model for young women. Finn has a thrilling and inspiring backstory. And Poe Dameron is a drop-dead gorgeous heartthrob.
😚 Empathetic 😚
But The Force Awakens experience isn’t all just feels about the movie happening. The movie itself is very emotional. Star Wars has always had a way of pulling at your heartstrings. You feel for the characters, and you know how they feel. There is one character in particular that I am so curious to see the progression of as the new trilogy continues… the internal struggles are real… and for more than one person!
😭 Utterly Heartbroken 😭
No Spoilers. I’m not saying what happens… but if you’ve seen it, you know. Ugh. My heart. That scene will haunt me forever. ALSO, the movie is almost over and that is heartbreaking. Yes, it is so good – so we don’t have to be heartbroken about that – and we can rewatch it all of the time, but the new Star Wars film won’t be there taunting us in the near future any more. What am I going to look forward to now? Christmas? Pffft. 2017 is soooooooo far away.
😄 Overwhelmingly Happy 😄
Guys. Seriously. Let’s all rejoice (and then buy tickets to 4 more screenings in the next 2 weeks). IT’S SO GOOD.
And right there you have my review… as per our My Fangirl Life Rating System, we rank all of the things out of 10 feels… and, to recap, I just said that Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens made me feel…
10 out of 10 Feels: 😊😣😅👍😎😌✊😚😭😄
Let us know what you think in the comments! Even if all you can express is that “It’s so good!”.
