A few days ago One Direction released their fifth album, titled Made in the AM. Fangirls everywhere rejoiced… and were saddened by the fact that this could potentially be the last album that 1D releases together (please don’t let this be true!!!). Regardless, listening to it for the first time was a magical experience (although the end was a bit depressing, as I relayed in my post An Overly Emotional Response to 1D’s “A.M.”. Now that I have a few listens of the album under my belt, I’d like to share with you a review of it, track by track. Read on to hear my thoughts on every song on the deluxe edition (obviously) of Made in the AM.
Track 1: “Hey Angel”
This is a great opening track for the album. It has a lengthy introduction and builds up to the addition of vocals. While this isn’t my favourite track, I think that it kicks things off with an upbeat note. I love the lines in the bridge – “Yeah I see you at the bar, at the edge of my bed/Backseat of my car, in the back of my head/I come alive when I hear your voice/It’s a beautiful sound, it’s a beautiful noise”. The sound and intensity in this section just gets me. And yes, One Direction, I do want to be more like you.

Track 2: “Drag Me Down”
We’ve been enjoying “Drag Me Down” for a little while now, and even though that is the case I still enjoyed hearing it within the context of the entire album, and I still enjoy listening to the track in general. This was the first song that I heard from Made in the AM, so it really set the tone for what I was expecting. I am happy to report that “Drag Me Down” didn’t let me down. That being said, I’m still not sure which backstory is most probable for the music video. There are so many possibilities! What do you think?

Track 3: “Perfect”
I can’t really give this song anything but a 10/10 – I mean, it’s perfect. I absolutely love this track. Kris and I both agree that this is likely the “Out of the Woods” from this album for us (aka the song we listened to on repeat excessively when it was released ahead of time but didn’t tired of… well, ever). This is quite possiby the best song on the album, even though it was released awhile ago; none of its sparkle has faded. I love the fact that it is a pretty well direct response to Taylor Swift’s “Style” (which the music video backed up even more). And the cherry on top is the section that says “And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about/Baby I’m perfect”. There are so many reasons that “Perfect” is perfect that Kris has already written a post about it.
MFL Rating: 10/10 Feels 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Track 4: “Infinity”
This song was also released ahead of time and I really liked it when it came out, but I’ve found that it’s paled in comparison to some of the ballads on the rest of the album. It do like the way that the track starts slow and builds to an almost dubstep-like drop at the end. I also love the lyrics to this song. It’s very sad and intense and slightly tragic. I don’t know what reasoning I can give about this being ranked lower than some except that those songs absolutely killed it.
MFL Rating: 8/10 Feels 💖⭐️✨💘💫💕🌟😍⚪️⚪️
Track 5: “End of the Day”
This track was only released a couple days in advance of the full album, and it was a fun one to hear ahead of time. I love the easy vibe of the song, and the way it seems to tell a story about a guy confessing his feelings to a girl, following his heart “even though it’ll break sometimes”. I totally agree with this sentiment. Working too hard to protect your heart can mean that you could miss out on something amazing. Some things are worth happening even if they’re not forever… like One Direction.

Track 6: “If I Could Fly”
This song is, in my opinion, the most beautiful thing One Direction has ever serenaded us with. Even now, after I’ve listened to it dozens of times, I can’t help but stop what I’m doing and stare off into the distance dreamily while hearing it. It almost brings me to tears every time. I must admit that I was listening to the track on repeat at Starbucks while writing this section of the post and I had to take a break in the middle to get my emotions under control (I’m embarrassing). I love the story that is told throughout the flawless lyrics. The idea of showing your true self to someone is something that everyone touches on at some point in their life, and it is scary. I also love the simplicity in the production. Their voices accompanied by only a piano and some strings as it builds in the end results in a beautiful combination, and One Direction’s harmonies are more gorgeous than ever. In addition to this, each member of the group is given the opportunity to have the spotlight and really show off what they can do here. It just kills me at the end when they take turns doing lines through that single section. Gorgeous.
MFL Rating: 10/10 Feels 🌅👬❤️👫💛👭🌇😍😭😵
Track 7: “Long Way Down”
I really like all the metaphors in the verses of this song. It is a story of a break up of a great relationship that just hits a block that is too hard to overcome. It’s sad when things fall apart like that. Louis is among those who received writing credit for this song, and I have to wonder if he drew some inspiration for this track from his failed relationship with Eleanor 💔. Or perhaps this is less to do with love and more with a partnership… perhaps this was inspired by Zayn leaving the band.

Track 8: “Never Enough”
The beginning of this song is so funny! I think it shocked us all a little bit the first time we listened to it but, as things went on, I found that I was pretty into it. The beat and acapella-type backup is fun and it turns out that the chorus is majorly catchy. I also think that the lyrics of this song are great: “Wanna pull an all nighter/And get into something we’ll never forget/Wanna stay up and party/The weekend away and not know when to quit”. I’d like to party with you, One Direction.
MFL Rating: 8/10 Feels 🎉🎶😜😛😘😍🎈🎉⚪️⚪️
Track 9: “Olivia”
For some reason this song just keeps getting stuck in my head. The whole “I love you I love you I love I love I love Olivia” is super catchy. This track is so Beatles-esque it hurts. From the production to the lyrics to the section at the end that says “When you go and I’m alone/You live in my imagination/The summertime and butterflies/All belong to your creation”, this song feels exactly like something that a British boy band should sing.
MFL Rating: 8/10 Feels 🌻🍄🌷❣️🌹🌾😍🌼⚪️⚪️
Track 10: “What A Feeling”
This song seriously makes me want to have a dance party for some reason. It has a great mid-tempo hazy 70s sound that I find pretty fun to groove to. Louis has cited Fleetwood Mac as an influence for this track, which is right on point, if you ask me. The lyrics are also super dreamy – any member of One Direction can be a king beside me anytime they like.
MFL Rating: 9/10 Feels 🌫🕯💜✨👑⚔👸🏼💜😍⚪️
Track 11: “Love You Goodbye”
Breakup sex? Really One Direction? That’s the first thing you ask for when a relationship ends? I have a lot of trouble with this song becuse I really love the production, the melody, and many of the lyrics (I’m particular attached to the “hey-hey-hey” throughout the song), but I’m just not sure I’m ok with the content of the song. I’ve listened to this enough now (since it was released earlier than the remainder of the album) that I think I’m starting to look past the meaning and just enjoy the song as something fun to listen to. Let’s hope this wasn’t Louis’ first reaction when he and Eleanor broke things off… though he is the only member of the band with a writing credit on this one.
MFL Rating: 7/10 Feels 💑💔🤔🛌💏💋😍⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 12: “I Want To Write You A Song”
This song is so sweet and adorable. I love the delicate guitar backing and the way their harmonies mix together within the melody. The hardest heart won’t be able to help but be melted by basically the cutest lyrics ever. Here’s an example: “I want to lend you my coat/One that’s as soft as your cheek/So when the world is cold/You’ll have a hidin’ place you can go/I want to lend you my coat”. And yes, the rest of the verses are that good. And yet again we have a very Beatles vibe. I love that 1D didn’t stick to stereotypical bubblegum pop; despite being a boy band they have chosen an old school sound. Not “old school boy band” but actual old school 60s/70s. This track, for example, is essentially “Blackbird” (and who doesn’t LOVE that song?).
MFL Rating: 9/10 Feels 💘💐🎀💌💕🌸💍❤️😍⚪️
Track 13: “History”
I can’t help but feel that this song is not a love song. Speculation on the internet is that this track is a message to the fans, letting them know that “this is not the end”, but I
have a different opinion. I feel that this song is about Zayn. There are lines in the song that just seem to point a little more to the camaraderie within the band than to a love story necessarily: “Minibars, expensive cars, hotel rooms, and new tattoos, good champagne, and private planes/But they don’t mean anything”. What girl can relate to all of that? Very few, I will say. This song has a very folksy and hopeful vibe and the chorus is crazy catchy. I feel like this is probably a great note to end the actual album on… though of course I’ve got the deluxe version so there is still more to come!
MFL Rating: 9/10 Feels 😄🍕🎸👬🍻🎮👬✌🏻😍⚪️
Track 14: “Temporary Fix”
One Direction! You are so scandalous! You always surprise me when you do things like this, but I love it. This upbeat track has almost a punkish edge to it and it is all about being someone’s “temporary fix” when they’re lonely. The line “Let me be your good night” sums it all up pretty well. I also love to rock out to the driving drum beat throughout the track. For a bonus track, this one is pretty darn fun and I am glad I was able to hear it.
MFL Rating: 7/10 Feels 😍😉😘💋😈👊🏻💥⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 15: “Walking in the Wind”
The music to this song is beautiful and so are the lyrics. I love that it tells the story of a relationship ending but the two people still being there for one another (Louis & Eleanor? 1D & Zayn? 1D in general?). Though they aren’t a couple anymore they know that they will see each other again and that their lives aren’t done entertwining. I love hearing about something other than the sad side of a breakup. This song is about looking at the bright side beyond. This track feels like a message to the fans and I hope that is true. I really hope that we’ll “see your face[s] again”, 1D.
MFL Rating: 8/10 Feels 😍💑💔💐💌😭😀❤️⚪️⚪️
Track 16: “Wolves”
This is probably my least favourite track on the album but it is still fun to listen to. I also still probably like it a lot more than many early One Direction songs. I love the “ooooo”s that are symbolic of a wolf’s howling, and the “I hear them calling for you”s are pretty fun to sing along to. Out of all the songs on the album, I don’t tend to choose to listen to this one specifically, but I can’t even say that I’m upset when it comes on of its own accord.
MFL Rating: 7/10 Feels 🌚🐺🐺🐺🐺🌝😍⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 17: “A.M.”
The other night I had to write an overly emotional response post about this song so I’m not sure I have too much more to say. I love this song and it gets a 10/10 due to being beautiful and summing up being part of One Direction’s fandom over the past several years. It is heartbreaking and perfect and complete. Instead of seeing images of lovers in my head while listening to this one, I see the One Direction boys hanging out until the wee hours of the AM, playing songs and goofing around. It’s a beautiful picture in my head.
Made in the AM as a whole feels like a love letter to One Direction’s fans, and it’s a beautiful goodbye. It’s filled with musings on sad breakups, reminiscing about nostalgic memories, and just a sliver of hope for the future. Woven through the album is this theme of “goodbye”. You know when your favourite show is ending, and the producers know it’s happening and they have the chance to wrap the final season up on their own terms, sending the message they want? That is what that album feels like. It was the band’s final chance to give the world the message they want it to hear.
Watching the boys grow up over the past few years, both individually and musically, has been a beautiful experience. From Up All Night to Take Me Home to Midnight Memories to Four, and on to Made int he AM, One Direction’s sound has been constantly evolving and maturing. I hope that in the future we will have more music from One Direction, because I can only imagine that they’ll continue their upward trajectory from here.
