By now you’ve likely had time to check out 5 Seconds of Summer’s sophomore album, Sounds Good Feels Good. And you’re life is definitely better for it. Obviously I have been listening to all of those tracks on repeat, so I might as well review them for you here.
Each song will receive a quick review (I promise to try to keep it short & to the point) and a Fangirl Rating. Here at My Fangirl Life we base things on a scale of 0 to 10 Feels, accompanying our rating with appropriate emojis. Strap in because I couldn’t help but order the Deluxe version fo the album; that means you’ve got 17 tracks of 5SoS fun ahead of you! Starting with…
Track 1: Money
The this-is-taking-forever-intro is a bit off-putting, but I guess it is the opening of the entire album…so that makes it ok…? The song is catchy, very anthemic. I love that we kick things off with a solid punk-pop track…hopefully a sign of development in the 5SoS sound?
MFL Rating: 7 out of 10 Feels 👽💬💸😎👊💥😜⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 2: She’s Kinda Hot
She’s Kinda Hot debuted on the radio during my personal transition from a casual 5 Seconds of Summer fan to a dedicated member of the 5SoS Family. The true catalyst of my transformation was seeing the boys live in concert, but this single sure didn’t hinder the change. I loved the pretty pop songs, like Amnesia, on their first album but what really spoke to me were the punkier tracks, like Social Casualty. If 5SoS was developing in that direction than I was definitely on board… and there is no denying She’s Kinda Hot is punk at its core. Random Favorite Part of the Song: the mocking “No, Not Really”s in the background of the first verse.
MFL Rating: 9 out of 10 Feels 🎸👏😍🔊🎶💀✊🔥😎⚪️
Track 3: Hey Everybody!
Preach 5SoS. Preach! As a 20-something, this song obviously speaks to me… much more than it would to any member of 5 Seconds of Summer, who I doubt “pays for gas with all the change in [their] car” or who’s “bank account has insufficient funds.” Still, there is a long period in most people’s lives where they are just fighting to get by (for all of you teens out there that think you’re in that time… lol… it’s called your 20s) and it’s nice to have a new anthem to rally behind.
MFL Rating: 9 out of 10 Feels 😎💴✊💶😸💷✌💵😏⚪️
Track 4: Permanent Vacation
Permanent Vacation concludes the suite of songs composing the “F**k the Man” section of the album. Coming off Hey Everybody! I was feeling riled up; it’s hard being young & poor. And then this track starts and I am ready to just say “F It!”, quit my job, and run off on some sort of adventure…a permanent vacation, if you will. This is why 5SoS is perfect: a voice of mayhem in my overly organized world. They are like the devil on my shoulder urging me towards fun & freedom…must resist…
MFL Rating: 7 out of 10 Feels ✊🌅🌴🍹☀️🎡😎⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 5: Jet Black Heart
Something slower, more emotional, but without being sappy & sweet. Tracks like this tell me 5SoS knows who they want to be. They’ve found the sound they were seeking (but likely had to deviate from on their first album due to age, marketability, and the need to have mass appeal). Plus, as someone who often says black is their favorite color because it matches their soul, the title (and lyrics, for that matter) is on the mark.
MFL Rating: 8 out of 10 Feels 💜😦😧💔😭😲💀💜⚪️⚪️
Track 6: Catch Fire
“I can’t change the world, but maybe I’ll change your mind.” How can you not fall in love with that line? This track is a bit of a pop regression for 5SoS, but I think that’s on purpose. The fact is, 5 Seconds of Summer is still a pop-punk band, even though they are hitting the punk part of the genre pretty hard early in the album we mellow out a bit as the track list continues. It’s cute, a love song without the mush.
MFL Rating: 7 out of 10 Feels 💔😢🔥❤️🔥💥😍⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 7: Safety Pin
The imagery in this song is 16-year-old-girl perfect. The safety pin through the broken heart has sorts become 5SoS’s new unofficial logo during the promotion of Sounds Good Feels Good, and whatever marketing guru thought it up is a genius. Grungy enough to appeal to the “forgotten & alone” feeling every teen has. So angsty. Yet cute enough for teen girls to want to put it up in their locker. This song is that logo…yes it’s about it, but it also just embodies the same feel. Angsty, cute & grungy…like the 5SoS boy, with their perfect hair, ripped jeans & band tees.
MFL Rating: 7 out of 10 Feels 💔✌😻👽🍕😈💜⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 8: Waste the Night
Speaking of imagery, Waste the Night paints a picture of a dark street. A boy stands in a pool of light beneath a flickering streetlamp. His eyes are alive with passion. His mouth smirks at you, that half-smile makes you head spin. It’s impossible to think straight. He pulls his hand out of his pocket. It’s outstretched, waiting for you. Do you take it? Do you take the chance? Do you try to make it? Do you try to make this night last forever? Correct Answer: YES!
MFL Rating: 9 out of 10 Feels 🌃⭐️👦🌙👩💋🔥❤️🌃⚪️
Track 9: Vapor
Am not sure why this song doesn’t resonate with me as much as the others. I enjoy the build to the chorus & the emotional lyrics, but I’m kind of just “meh”. Maybe it’s too much push? Maybe it’s the fact that I don’t really like the word ‘vapor’? I didn’t realize it until I put this song on repeat to write this review, but I feel about ‘vapor’ the way a lot of people feel about ‘moist’. It just bothers me. I’m ok with ‘vaporize’, but apparently not ‘vapor’. Hey ‘moist’-haters, do you have an issue with ‘moisture’?
MFL Rating: 6 out of 10 Feels 💦😭☔️🌊💧🏄⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 10: Castaway
Oooooo this song is cool. It’s almost haunting…but in an anthemic way. I will admit that I was judging a book by its cover and thought that a song called Castaway wouldn’t be that good. I assumed it would be cheesey, for some reason. Instead it’s huge. The music. The lyrics. That whole first verse is brilliantly put. It makes me feel..and my ‘jet black heart’ rarely feels things.
MFL Rating: 8 out of 10 Feels 🚢⚓️😢💔🌴🐠🚣🌅⚪️⚪️
Track 11: The Girl Who Cried Wolf
Pretty. Soooooo pretty. And sad. But hopeful. This song is a roller coast for me apparently. 5SoS is growing up and this song is proof. It’s oddly mature, demonstrating the complexities of a real relationship. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way I lov this.
MFL Rating: 8 out of 10 Feels 🙅💔😢🙆❤️😊💬😍⚪️⚪️
Track 12: Broken Home
Ok I can’t handle this song. It’s so heart breaking. Divorce from the view of a child. Ugh, my heart can’t handle this. Seriously…I’m just moving on…*sniffle*
MFL Rating: 8 out of 10 Feels 😮😦😧😢😭😫😲😵⚪️⚪️
Track 13: Fly Away
This song kills me, in the amazing way that it feeds right in to that unsettled part of me. The part that is desperate to “fly away.” The part that is constantly “dreaming of the place to start again.” The part that is composed of wanderlust & the insane need to be where I am not. The part that wants nothing more than “a little bit of California with a little bit of London sky” and “a little bit of ocean with a New York state of mind” (but mostly the London sky). For the record, that ‘part’ makes up about 90% of who I am.
MFL Rating: 8 out of 10 Feels 💭😌✈️🌉🌄🌃🌎💭⚪️⚪️
Track 14: Invincible
Who doesn’t feel invincible sometimes? Hopefully not too often though. Hey Reader – You are beautiful. You are special. You matter. – This song just made me want to tell you that. Remember MFL loves you & is here is you need to chat: @Fangirls_Online / krispadget / My Fangirl Life.
MFL Rating: 6 out of 10 Feels 💜💛💚💙❤️💖⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️
Track 15: Airplanes
I’m inspired. Do you need inspiration? Listen to this track. Seriously, do it right now. I’m feeling more confident in myself. I’m feeling more confident in being myself. I want adventure. I want to feel alive. And I want to believe in the decisions I make to get those things. I will not doubt myself. I believe. (It’s that powerful of a track.)
MFL Rating: 9 out of 10 Feels ✈️☁️😇🚨🌃🔥❤️✊😄⚪️
Track 16: San Francisco
5SoS, you got so wistful at the end of this album. It started with such a strong statement vibe. Screw the Man! Then we got sad & angsty. We were heartbroken but persevered. Because of it we became stronger & more confident. And now, now we are dreamers. No longer disillusioned with the system, but also not content with the boring day-to-day. We will not sit idly by; we will be who we are & get what we want. Sounds Good Feels Good was a journey and I loved every minute of it. This song makes me feel content with where we’ve landed. Dear 5 Seconds of Summer – I am happy and you made that happen.
MFL Rating: 9 out of 10 Feels 🎆😚💋💌🌉✨😊❤️🌃⚪️
Track 17: Outer Space/Carry On
I did not expect such an epic end to the album. KG & I were both taken aback by how powerful this track was. Trust 5SoS to finish with a bang…especially if you consider concluding the record with my new favourite song as a “bang”. It makes me want to rise to my feet, ace to the sky, lighter in the air, screaming the lyrics to the heavens…man this track will be amazing live. 5SoS is amazing live.
Carry on is just a perfect little bonus to make an already ecstatic Kris even more content.
