I am a big fangirl, but what I’m the biggest fan of might surprise some of you… Yes I love Doctor Who and Disney, but I think I might really hit my fangirl peak when it comes to figure skating. While it may seem like I blog a lot about cosplay, history and Pretty Little Liars, what I actually spend the most time writing about is figure skating. I post here weekly, but I also run my own figure skating blog at princessbeanyskates.com. Check it out!
Kris wrote a post a few months ago on the Hottest Men of Figure Skating (and Women). So many dreamboats ❤️. If looking at that isn’t enough to convince you to watch figure skating, then I’ll try one more time…
Last week was Skate America, the start of the Grand Prix series, which is really the start of the figure skating season. From this point on, it’s 6 months of figure skating bliss. This fangirl can’t wait!
To bring all you other fangirls up to speed, I’m going to break it down into fangirl terms. If there’s one skater you should know, it’s Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. This Olympic Champion is the biggest thing in figure skating right now. He’s cute, talented and a bit of a rockstar. He’s essentially the One Direction of figure skating. So if you want to fangirl over anyone, it’s him. Really, it’s no different than how you fangirl over anything else. Let me share with you all how:
Being a Yuzuru Hanyu fangirl is the same as being a One Direction fangirl!
The members of One Direction are mega talented. Having been formed on a singing show, we know they can actually sing. Yuzuru Hanyu, or Yuzu for short, is also mega talented. He became Junior World Champion at 15 and then just a few years later became the second youngest to win the Olympic Men’s figure skating title. Since then he’s been in a class of his own, winning titles and pushing the technical limits of the sport.
A Passionate Obsession
You know how the members of One Direction can’t go out in public without security and being recognized? Well it’s the same for Yuzu. He is quite possibly the biggest celebrity in the country when he’s in Japan . When he’s at a skating competition he can’t go anywhere without his team. Fans are there to meet him when he arrives at airports, leaves arenas and pretty much tries to do anything else. It’s become known as Hanyu Mania in the skating world. The security at these events has been heightened to a level that hasn’t been seen before, or at least not for many years.
Yuzu also has this thing where he carries a Winnie the Pooh Kleenex box with him at competitions. It sits on the boards during practice and is by his side when he awaits his marks after each skate. This has become a bit of a thing, and the fans have embraced this to the extreme. When Yuzu skated at the World Championships in Shanghai last March it was literally raining Poohs.
How many fangirls have paid lots of money or traveled across the country to see the 1D boys?? I think there’s more than a few of you out there! That’s nothing compared to what the Yuzu fangirls are doing. Figure skating tickets are so hard to come by and so expensive in Japan that it’s cheaper for people to fly to North America or Europe for the opportunity to see Yuzu skate live. I don’t want to know how expensive some of these trips are, but I can only imagine. That’s definitely dedication!
The Beautiful Rockstar
Hanyu Mania isn’t as big as it is simply because he’s talented. He’s also quite possibly the most beautiful Japanese person I’ve ever seen. His face, hair, skin is just Asian perfection. And while I often say he’s just so cute and just the most adorable, others definitely see the sex appeal in it. There were a number of new fans jumping on the Yuzu train after his cool and sexy program at the Olympics. Yuzu doesn’t sing or play an instrument but he’s still a rockstar. In the past he’s skated to some fun and upbeat music, and each time he does, the crowd goes crazy… Then again, they go crazy for everything he does.
Boy Band Friends
One large difference is that One Direction is a group and Yuzu is a solo act. BUT while it’s just Yuzu out there on the ice during competition he is backed up by a number of stellar teammates. His Louis, Harry, Liam and Niall are Javier Fernandez and Nam Nguyen. Yuzu, Javi and Nam comprise Team Orser and together, while dominating the World scene, are always sure to be the most adorable and supportive teammates.
When Yuzu debuted his new costumes for the season a few weeks ago the fangirls went crazy overanalyzing the colours and details. These were both costumes we’d seen before, except there were some changes. They’d been revamped. Just like tumblr has a lot to say about everything Harry wears, the internet had a lot to say about Yuzu’s recent fashion choices.
We were recently hit with the news that One Direction is going on hiatus in a few months… Which means we need to appreciate every moment we get through the next few months. A figure skater’s career is very similar. You never know when it’ll be over. Last season Yuzu suffered a freak injury after a collision with another skater, and he said that he thought his career might be over. It was a scary thought for someone who was 19 at the time. Yuzu says he wants to win the Olympics again in 2018, but who knows after that. Also, who knows if he’ll make it there without getting injured. Which is why I am so happy I got to see One Direction live this past summer and why I am so excited I get to see Yuzu skate live twice this season.
There’s a reason I’m bringing this up today; this weekend is Skate Canada International, the second stop on the figure skating Grand Prix circuit. And guess who just happens to be skating… Yuzu ❤️ !!! I know you all want to see him skate now, be sure to check it out!!
Thanks for reading, I hope I convinced at least one of you
