It’s the Monday after Edmonton Expo, which means I’m in the depths of PCD (Post-Con Depression) and I’m reminiscing about all the fun we had over the weekend posing for photos, chatting with randoms, geeking out, and hanging with our nerdy friends. So many of our newest recent connections have been made through the awesome and fun cosplay community, and I thought it would be neat to tell you a couple stories about making cosplay friends.
It struck me on Thursday night (aka Expo Eve), when Kris, Justine, and I were sitting around putting finishing touches on all of our outfits for the weekend. Kris was gluing snaps onto the feathered collar for her new Sansa, obviously. Justine was brushing out an excessive number of hair extensions which we had just used to test Margaery’s wedding style. I was sitting on my computer, receiving messages from two awesome friends we’ve made from cosplay events over the past 6 months. This is where my new connections are coming from now – from the nerd and cosplay community!
We met Danny from Baconation at Calgary Expo this past April. He was dressed as Joffrey from Game of Thrones, and we stalked him down because we were dressing as Daenerys, Sansa, and Margaery the next day. He gave us his number, and we were able to connect for a photo shoot, resulting in these photos, including this most epic one:
Since that shoot, we’ve attended another Con together and done other fun friend activities. We spent lots of time together this past Saturday at Edmonton Expo. This was expected since we were part of a large and epic Game of Thrones cosplay group (don’t worry – photos to come!). But we also hung out a lot outside of our GOT photo shoot time and it was a whole lot of fun to get to know each other even better. On Sunday our costumes didn’t match since we had changed to SHIELD, but we all still wanted to wander around together so we decided we could just be friends instead of a cosplay group.
Obviously we hit it off right away and have become excellent friends since! We even managed to convince Bella to dress as Arya to go along with our other Game of Thrones outfits for Edmonton Expo this weekend. She was an absolutely fabulous addition… and this was actually her first large expo experience. I know we all are looking forward to more cons, photo shoots, and general friend fun with Bella. Cosplay only got us started – we are growing our friendship from there!
It’s nice when you meet someone at a cosplay event because you never have to go through that weird and awkward “So… I sometimes like to dress up in costumes of my favourite fictional characters and do photo shoots” conversation. You met them when you were both in cosplay. They get it. They’re weirdos too (at least a little bit). Cosplay friends are the best.
Another thing I really like about our cosplay friends is that we’re all totally into helping each other out with new and exciting costumes. Bella has offered to take some of Justine’s sewing in the future (since Justine plays seamstress to Kris and I as well as making her own stuff), and last week Danny texted me to ask for advice on what make-up to use to make him look Joffrey pale. There are no weird questions when it comes to cosplay!
