Kris introduced our “Fangirl Playlists” feature last month with Longing for Adventure, and today I’m going to add to it by bringing you Your Best Breakup Soundtrack.
Breakups are pretty much the worst, but you can work your way through them with good friends, ice cream, and, of course, the perfect playlist. All you need to do is get through the 5 Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Not an easy task, but I guess that’s why breakups are so hard. And once all that is over, you’ll be able to move on and take on your future. Read on for a playlist to mirror your progress:
This is the first reaction after the breakup… and it can typically be accompanied by shock and confusion. At this point, your heart doesn’t really believe that it is over. You might even think about what that relationship could still be.
1.What Do You Mean? – Justin Bieber
2. My Happy Ending – Avril Lavigne
You might be angry at your ex, yourself, your friends, the world… pretty much anything. But at this point in the grieving process you are just angry. You might even write a song about it
3. Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were) – The Veronicas
4. Don’t – Ed Sheeran
5. Son of A – Mackenzie Porter
This is the part where you still try to find ways to make the relationship work. You might talk to your ex, or maybe just to yourself or your friends. You try to negotiate.
6. Half A Heart – One Direction
7. Far Away – Nickelback
8. Can’t Have You – Jonas Brothers
This is the saddest part of the cycle. The hopelessness, the tiredness, and the lack of belief in any kind of future. Keep pushing through, though!
7. Last Kiss – Taylor Swift
8. Incomplete – Backstreet Boys
9. Amnesia – 5 Seconds of Summer
At this point can finally look back and accept that your relationship is over. Acceptance might creep in slowly, but you will start to plan for your future and see possibilities in it. There might still be sadness – there might always be some sadness – but you can start to move forward.
10. I Remember Everything – Daisy Mallory
11. Broken Ones – Jacquie Lee
12. Miss Movin’ On – Fifth Harmony
And this is when you have made it through the 5 stages and finally do start to fully move on… perhaps not quite with a new relationship, but you don’t need one. You’re good to just dance the night away with your squad.
12. Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys
13. New Romantics – Taylor Swift
14. Me & My Girls – Fifth Harmony
