I love tv. I love old tv shows. I love new tv shows. I love tv specials. I am not ashamed to admit that television gives me hours of enjoyment every week. Television has permeated into so much my life:
- I put on a tv show while getting ready in the morning (often @Midnight…so funny).
- I’ll have it on as background noise to half watch while I cook/clean/write blog posts (right now I’m rewatching the entirety of That 70’s Show on Netflix).
- I’ll binge watch entire seasons of shows I’ve never seen or have fallen behind on (just caught up on Teen Wolf, now it’s on to Arrow & The Flash).
- And I have more than a couple of shows I watch religiously week-after-week never missing an episode (I cannot wait for Once Upon Time to be back).
Today marks the return of one of my favourite shows: Doctor Who. Series 9 is bound to be packed with adventure, excitement & aliens and I cannot wait. If the season trailer is any indication shit is getting crazy. Also, it’s killing me that I don’t know anything about Maise Williams’ character (but LOVE HER!).
Anyways, the return of an old (and by old I mean 50 years in the making) favourite also turns my head towards the future. What are the new, up-and-coming shows for this season? I dug through the premiere rubble to find the new tv shows that I’m actually excited about for the September’s High Five!
5. The Bastard Executioner – Tuesday, Sept 15th on FX
This one is cheating a bit since it has actually already started. The 2-hour premiere aired on Tuesday and was disappointingly slow for the first hour & 40 minutes. However, the end picked up & left me wanting to continue giving this newbie a chance. Why should you too? 1 – Sword wielding heroes & bloody battles. 2 – Period drama costuming & sets. 3 – Ed Sheeran…that’s right, our fav ginger will be appearing in the show this season in a recurring role of “Sir Cormac, an ambitious and deadly protégé of a high-ranking church elder”.
4. Heroes Reborn – Thursday, Sept 24th on NBC
Remember the first time you watched the first season of Heroes? Do you remember the feelings it gave you? Fear. Excitement. Hope. I would rank those episodes among the greatest seasons of television I have ever seen. Heroes Reborn has the potential to be that. The trailer implies it could be. It gives me goosebumps. But you’ll notice that Heroes Reborn only ranks 4th on my list. Fool me once Heroes, shame on you. Fool me twice… Let’s just say I’ve been burned by you before.
3. Flesh & Bone – Sunday, Nov 8th on Starz
I’m always intrigued by dance shows. I wasn’t a dancer myself, but I competed in a similarly intense sport (figure skating). The drama is always so weird & twisted, in a way you wouldn’t expect from a beautiful, girly thing. The darkness Flesh & Bones promises, with the underbelly of being a professional ballerina has me hooked.
2. Supergirl – Monday, Oct 26th on CBS
Who’s stoked for our first taste of DC girl power? I, for one, cannot wait to see a DC comic woman stray from the role of ‘love interest’ and make her mark on the screen (even if it is the small screen). This show looks quirky and cute; I’m hoping it will sit somewhere between the heavy cinematic material and the light CW shows (not that Arrow is exceptionally light, but it’s more than made up for by the cheesy Flash). My one complaint, even before seeing the premiere, is the lack of overlap. Boo on you DC for not having the forethought & planning abilities of Marvel. The Marvel cinematic/television universe is second to none…it almost makes you forget that Marvel sold off half of their good characters. On the Marvel note, I’m also psyched for Marvel’s Jessica Jones, premiering Friday, Nov 20th on Netflix.
1. Scream Queens – Tuesday, Sep 22nd on Fox
I have been waiting impatiently for far too long for this show. Since Emma Roberts’ very first Scream Queens tweet I have been longing for a horrifically girly horror tv show. The star-studded cast is just icing on a hopefully very bloody cake. Scream Queens is promising to be the show I have always dreamed of. A show just perfect for me. Please don’t disappoint.
Bonus: Shadowhunters – on ABC Family
I decided to tack Shadowhunters on the end rather than include it in the list because of it’s premiere date (it had nothing to do with having too many choices…?…I swear). Based on the beloved Mortal Instruments YA novels this show will follow Clary, Jace and the Lightwood children (❤️Alec) in their quest to protect humans from demons of the unseen shadow world. Here’s hoping it will be more successful than the 2013 film. Here’s hoping it’s successful enough that they try to capitalize on it with a “spin-off” prequel series set in Victorian London. Any Cassandra Clare fan knows that Infernal Devices is the better series (*sigh* Will ❤️?￢ﾝﾤ️). Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the new year to check this much anticipated (by me at least) series out.
What are you excited to watch this season? Or perhaps you’ve already found a new favourite show? We are always open to binge-watching suggestions so make sure to let us know in the comments!
Love & Luck,
