It seems like the world expects you to be able to identify which Hogwarts house you would be in… or at least the fangirl world does. It’s a standard “get-to-know-you” question for geek icebreakers. Sometimes people have lengthy discussions about their houses and expect you to be able to contribute. I even have to choose a house to do certain Buzzfeed quizzes! There’s never an “I don’t belong” button.
I do love Harry Potter quite a lot, but I identify with what Four said in Divergent:
“I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent, and honest and kind.”
I’m sorry guys… I just don’t fit into a Hogwarts house. I’m not cunning like a Slytherin, but I am quite strategic and ambitious. I’m not studious like a Ravenclaw, but I am intelligent and I love to learn. I’m not obviously brave like a Gryffindor, but I can be reckless when it comes to going after what I want. I will admit that I am pretty loyal like a Hufflepuff, but I am also insanely competitive and a creative problem solver, both of which are distinctly un-Hufflepuff-like.
When we went to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida earlier this year, Kris dressed as a Slytherin student, Justine dressed as a Hufflepuff student, and I dressed as though I was a visiting student from Beauxbatons.
For one, the Beauxbatons uniforms fit my style, Hipster Folk Princess, better than any of the Hogwarts Houses do – don’t you think? But also, I just feel like it’s unfair that I have to categorize myself like this. I am who I am, and I don’t fit into any of the neat little boxes created in the Harry Potter universe.
Does anyone else have this issue or am I the only one? Because according to the internet, I should be able to choose a house and I just can’t! Let me know in the comments if you have the same problem and maybe we can start a group of Hogwarts Factionless or something.
