I’ve recently been rereading the travel blog from the Europe trip that Kris and I took in 2011. It’s been too long since I walked the streets of a European country! One thing caught my attention this time and made me laugh. When Kris and I were in Italy she referred to my ‘ Twilight Bucket List’. Now this makes me laugh because I think I perhaps do have a Twilight Bucket List, or at least I did a couple of years ago.
I have a lot of thoughts on Twilight, but I think I’ll save those for a later post. For now let’s just say that I am still in love with Robert Pattinson and usually sleep in a t-shirt with his face on it (I don’t know how, but I’ve accumulated A LOT of Twilight shirts over the years). As a seemingly unashamed Twilight fangirl, I’d love to tell you about my Twilight Bucket List by adding another instalment to our series My Fangirl Life on Quest. The first stop, as it should be for most who live in North America, was Forks.
I read the first three Twilight books during the summer of 2008 and was obsessed. This was before the disaster that is Breaking Dawn and the onslaught of sub-par movies. At that time I just couldn’t get enough of Edward and Bella.
During that summer, my family was traveling around the Pacific Northwest when I just happened to suggest a side trip to Forks (because obviously). I had researched that there were some things to see and do there, but as this was before mega Twilight-mania I wasn’t expecting much. So we slightly detoured, drove an extra few hours through trees and came upon a small little city in the middle of nowhere.
The first stop was the Forks Chamber of Commerce I think I had read this was the thing to do online. Here we were greeted by a town embracing a popular book series. We posed for some photos and they gave us a map to go on the ‘Twilight Tour’ of Forks.
Other highlights on the Forks tour included:
– the houses that inspired both the Swan and Cullen residences
– Carlisle’s reserved parking stall at the hospital
– the high school parking lot where Edward saves Bella in a slippery situation, no silver Volvo present
– Forks Outfitters, where Bella works. Owned by Mike Newton’s family
We drove through the small village, identified which house supposedly belongs to Jacob and decided exactly where the Forks/La Push reservation boundary was. But the highlight out here had to be First Beach itself. I love a beach filled with rocks and driftwood. It seemed like a perfect place to meander while wrapped up in a sweater, or to cuddle up under some blankets and have a bonfire. It was hot this day though, so instead we splashed our toes in the water and snapped some photos. I quite possibly still have rocks and driftwood from First Beach in my closet at my parents house.
This clearing has also been designated the famous meadow that Bella and Edward frequent on a number of occasions. It was very pretty, though not as pretty as the flower filled one from the movies. I remember my sister wouldn’t lay down all Bella and Edward like with me.
The area is also filled with a number of moss covered trees – which my Dad decided to climb while pretending he was Edward. I should mention that my Dad has also read all of the Twilight books
I had a blast in Forks that summer. I still can’t believe my parents actually took us there. I can just imagine how much fun I’d have taking pictures in Forks now, with more ridiculous photo shoot experience under my belt. I’d be acting out scenes like a crazy person… perhaps I’d even sew Bella’s wedding dress!
I went to Forks way before the madness hit. There were only a handful of other Twilight fans there when I was. I can’t even imagine how busy it became in the following years. But now I’m curious… is Forks still a crazy tourist destination? Or has it fallen back to what it was 7 years ago? Perhaps I need to make another trip to the Pacific Northwest to find out!
Stay tuned for more information on my Twilight Bucket List. Believe me, I’ve visited more places related to Twilight and stood where Robert Pattinson has on numerous occasions.
Thanks for reading! Let me know about your Twilight adventures in the comments.
