I am an event planner by trade (check me out over at KristinGlassEvents.com), which means that I absolutely love to plan parties. My friends love to point out the similarities between me and Pinkie Pie. I truly believe that there is nothing better than a party with a good theme… and no theme is better than a fandom theme! So I’ve decided to start sharing with you, loyal readers, some ideas for various parties that have some sort of nerd-related twist. Fandom themed parties aren’t just for kids, you know!
Today I will be writing about how to plan an Under the Sea party, inspired by Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Read on for ideas!
About the Theme
Under the Sea is, of course, an adorable theme for a little girl’s birthday party or a baby shower, but that’s not all it’s good for! You can totally grow this theme up a little bit by ditching of some of the more juvenile elements (like the Ariel dolls, or cartoony fish) and throwing in a dash of glam. Under the Sea can totally work for a charity fundraiser, casual mixer, or just any sort of adult gathering!
There are so many great decor ideas on this theme around the internet that it wasn’t easy to choose my favourites. Here are a selection of things that I would choose to include in my Under the Sea party.
I love the use of whimsical shades of blue and seafoam green with pops of coral and light pink. This combination creates a really great palette that mixes well and looks very sophisticated. Adding pearls to these colours glams it up even more (while keeping with the ocean theme), and some nautical details and “found” items, like rope or cutlery, can add a bit of edge. I particularly love the folded paper shells in various colours on the backdrop as it adds colour and shape while still being super affordable!
If I were planning a party like this one, I would totally want to have a treasure chest off in the corner full of some sort of goodies (like you would find on the ocean floor) as well as a few ship-themed items to remind my guests of Eric. Maybe a ship’s wheel or some rope?
There are no end of adorable sea-themed treats to serve at your party, but maybe steer clear of actual fish…
Check out a selection of fun snack ideas below!I love every one of these menu ideas, from a whimsical candy bar in the correct colours, to the little candy crab snacks and “bait”, to the starfish sandwiches. And those designer macarons are works of art! Get creative with this, use the colours that you’ve selected, and add some sort of ocean twist.
Your activities will change depending on the type of event (strategic event planning is a must!), but I did find one cute idea that I thought was a little multi-purpose.
Fill a pail with sand and a variety of “treasures”. For a fundraising event, you could have the treasures be beads, and the participants could buy scoops of sand, which you then filter through and find the beads in that scoop. They can keep these until the end of the evening, when you announce the winning bead and the person holding it wins a prize. For a child’s party, maybe the “treasures” are actually the prize itself. Get creative here and make it fun!
