It’s May and summer is just around the corner! I can’t wait for some long days of fun in the sun 🙂
Back in January I created a list of Fangirl Ways to Escape the Winter Blues. I don’t know where you all live, but summer is the best time to be here in Edmonton. It’s warm, sunny and there’s lots to do. It is also a great time to partake in a number of fandom inspired activities. In a follow up to my last post, I present another contribution to the High Five series: Fangirl Ways to Embrace the Summer Sun.
Game of Thrones
I mentioned a photo shoot in my last post, but the landscape of Westeros provides opportunity for photoshoots in all seasons. In summer specifically, it’s just much more comfortable to be outside in costumes… unless you’re a member of the Night’s Watch. Then you’d probably be most comfortable in the middle of winter.
There might be a castle or some ruins in your city, but there isn’t so much in mine. That being said, the University here has some gorgeous old buildings and the Legislature grounds are very picturesque. I think both could be a perfect backdrop for King’s Landing, Highgarden or Meereen. I think Kris, KG, and I will need to have a photoshoot this summer in our Game of Thrones dresses.
And again, if you don’t have the actual dresses get creative! Embrace the colours and hair styles of your favourite characters and have fun taking some photos.
Last summer I did a lot of canoeing on the little nearby lakes and the river that runs through our city. Every trip was a fun excursion. You get to enjoy the sun, be on the water, and if you’re lucky you might see some wildlife. What better way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city? Make your canoe trip more of an adventure and pretend you’re Pocahontas waiting to find out what’s just around the riverbend. Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to meet your own John Smith or have a raccoon join along.
If you don’t have a canoe I know a number of stores that rent them for a decent daily price. And if you prefer to stay off the water, hit up a nice beach.
Summer is the perfect time to roadtrip. Grab some friends and hit the road! You don’t particularly need a destination, sometimes the most fun and greatest adventure is had while driving. Getting in a car and driving reminds me a lot of Supernatural. Those boys are constantly living life on the road… why not try the same? Though maybe check your planned stops before hand to prepare yourself for any demonic activity.
The My Fangirl Life team recently took a roadtrip into rural Alberta and explored many of the random sites our province has to offer and in the next couple months we are planning a longer roadtrip further north. I can’t wait for the fun times. Whether it’s a family trip or you’re with a group of friends I encourage you to get out and explore!
Kris, KG and I have plans to have a picnic in one of the beautiful parks here while dressed in our Disney Princess cosplays. We’re going to pack a basket with treats from my Disney Princess Cookbook and grab a blanket. It’ll be a perfect opportunity to enjoy the summer sun and take a photo or two. I also can’t wait for little girls to see Belle, Aurora and Ariel having a picnic.
If you don’t have any cosplay dresses, why not have a picnic in Disneybound!
Doctor Who continuously makes me think of how much I’d struggle to keep up with all the running the Doctor and his Companion do. I would need some serious training before jumping into the TARDIS. And the summer is the best time to take up running. Exploring outside on the trails, through the parks and across the bridges is a great way to explore your city and get some exercise, which Kris and I have recently started to do. It’s a great way to get some sun and enjoy the outdoors. Plus, I’m preparing myself for when the Doctor comes.
And if running isn’t really your thing, there’s nothing wrong with a nice walk or bike ride outdoors.
Hope you enjoyed the list. Let me know what else I should add in the comments.
