We’ve been celebrating Game of Thrones all week on My Fangirl Life, and that season 5 premiere is getting so darn close! To continue the celebration today, I’d like to share a contribution to our “I Ship That” series!
Here we will discuss our ships, your ships, or just any ships we want to talk about. Ron and Hermione? Sure. Dany and Jon? Yes!! Outlaw Queen? Absolutely. Kris and cheese? Why not! Tune in to this series for discussions on all of our favourite ships – maybe some of them are yours too! Don’t know what ships are? Here’s a quick definition from our Fangirl Glossary.
Ship (noun) Derived from the word relationship, a ship is a romantic pairing of two characters. Ship can also be used as a (verb). To ship two characters is to pair them in a romantic relationship.
Today I’d like to discuss my top Game of Thrones OTP: Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen. Not only are these probably my two favourite characters in the series, but I really and truly believe that they need to end up together, for just so many reasons. At the timing of writing this, I’ve read all 5 books and am close to the end of watching season 4 of the show.
First of all, don’t they make a fabulously good-looking couple? I mean, this isn’t enough on its own, but it totally helps the cause:
Jon and Dany both have very tragic stories, and they’ve both had to make really difficult choices to prove themselves and to do the right thing. I think that when (slash I suppose if… though I think it’s inevitable) they do meet, they’ll understand each other a little bit. They each have had to win over groups of people, and ended up doing so in such a way that men and women were willing to follow them no matter what. It takes a special quality to instill that type of faith with the masses, and Dany and Jon both have it. Can you imagine the type of loyalty they would inspire ruling Westeros side by side?
Speaking of this, I guess I should elaborate a little bit on exactly why I think that the marriage of these two would be a perfect match. Everyone has their Jon Snow origin theory, but I am just so convinced that mine has to be right. Kris and I have just been discussing it to death, and we’re both in agreement on this one.
I think that Jon Snow is the secret child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Remember all those flashbacks that Ned had throughout the first book, of him promising Lyanna something? As of yet that hasn’t been explained. I think that she had just given birth and was asking him to promise to take care of Jon. Ned loved his sister more than pretty much anyone, so when she died, he brought Jon home and told Catelyn that he was his child. Overall it’s pretty hard to believe that Ned had a bastard child, don’t you think? He is probably the most loyal and principled character in this series.
Despite the fact that throughout the early part of the series, Rhaegar is painted as having “kidnapped” Lyanna, you learn some things from different points of view later that make Rhaegar seem like a pretty stand up guy. I don’t think he so much stole her away as fell in love with her, and she with him. Unfortunately he was already married so it was a bit of a scandal, plus Lyanna was betrothed to Robert. This was what lead to the downfall of the Targaryen family.
I do realize that if I am correct, it will mean that Jon is Dany’s nephew. In today’s society and our world, the two of them falling in love would be an issue. But I’d like to point out that the Targaryens wed brother to sister for years in Westeros. I’ve decided that overall I’m ok with this one in that world. Besides, if Jon does have Targaryen blood, then he could be one of the three “heads of the dragon” that keep coming up.
Uniting Jon and Dany in marriage would likely bring together enough of Westeros for peace. Any Targaryen sympathizers would come to Dany’s aid. The North would rally around Jon when his identity is revealed, plus he’d have the support of the wall and the wildlings. In the books, Robb named Jon his heir before he died, which has not yet come into play in any way but I have to believe it wasn’t pointless.
Jon’s ice and Dany’s fire is the match that Westeros needs, and deserves. Jon’s calm and rational demeanor can balance out Dany’s emotional responses. The book series is called A Song of Ice and Fire, for goodness sake!
The only thing I’m a little worried about is the fact that Dany apparently can’t bear children. That creates a lot of future problems… but I’m just assuming that the magic that took her fertility away can somehow bring it back at some point.
