Welcome to Game of Thrones week here on My Fangirl Life! We’re counting down the days until the new season premieres on Sunday, so check back throughout the week for all sorts of Westeros-related fun!
For those of you who don’t know, I’m actually an Event Planner by trade – you can check me out over at Kristin Glass Events if you want to know more. This means that I get obsessed with any and all events, big and small. I love to plan events. I love to talk about events. I love to go to events. I love pretty much everything to do with events.
With my unhealthy Game of Thrones obsession over the past couple months, I am just itching to plan a Game of Thrones themed wedding – a Red Wedding, if you will. Ok, so I don’t necessarily want everything that comes along with the Red Wedding, but I do think Game of Thrones would be a lot of fun. And perfect for the fangirls and fanboys of the world.
So, here it is. This is how I would plan a Game of Thrones themed wedding if I was given the opportunity (someone please give me the opportunity!).
Obviously a castle would be an ideal location, but I also think that you could make a lot of different places work well. For example, a clearing in the woods could be set up to be a godswood. A field could be the Dothraki sea. A barn or other outdoor venue could totally be made to look like something out of the TV show. Just use your imagination! If indoors, set up lots of candles around the room to add ambiance and make it feel like the throne room.
I would probably choose red as the main theme colour, solely so it could be referred to as the “Red Wedding”. That would be my main tribute to that tragic event. Other than that, everything should be rich and of different textures.
The bride and groom would each need to design a house crest. Here’s an example!!
These could be used on invitations and all print materials. And OBVIOUSLY on the cloaks that they will each need to design and have made for the ceremony.
You could have your whole wedding party dress up like this couple did. You could even encourage all your guests to dress up as their favourite GoT characters! If you want a bit more of an understated feel, have your bridal party in rich colours coinciding with the colours used in each crest.
Personally, I love Margaery’s wedding dress…
The ceremony should be short and sweet, but should include the exchanging of the bride’s cloak for one with the groom’s crest. This symbolizes him bringing her under his family’s protection. The ceremony should also include a solemn saying of the vows:
“In the sight of the Seven, I hereby seal these two souls, binding them as one for eternity. Look upon one another and say the words.”
“Father. Smith. Warrior. Mother. Maiden. Crone. Stranger. I am his/hers, and s/he is mine, from this day, until the end of my days.”
Of course, you can jazz it up a little. But either way, this should be said with the bride’s and groom’s hands tied together ceremoniously.
I would have long tables set if possible, like at a feast, with full place settings and fancy goblets to drink from, and lots of wine to fill them with. Obviously, you’d also have to have a fancy cake. There are so many online right now, I can’t even handle it, but this one is awesome:
One last tip: Whatever you do, DO NOT PLAY “The Rains of Castermere” at the reception. Or at any point throughout day of the wedding.
What did I miss? What would you do with a Game of Thrones themed wedding?
