This week we say Farewell to Glee and I just realized I’m a little saddened by that fact. I was a fan from day one and have followed it ever since. I was obsessed during the first few seasons and downloaded all the songs and listened to them on repeat. My sister and I spent a lot of time singing along to our favourite songs, whether with Glee Karaoke or nice and loud in our cars. The later seasons did lose my interest a little and I contemplated not watching anymore, but I just couldn’t do it. Then after Cory Monteith’s death I cried – but also realized I didn’t care much anymore about the show. I didn’t care about the new students or the plot lines. Regardless, I kept watching. I loved when we moved to New York and in the current season I think Glee has finally found its footing again. It’s not quite up to the brilliance of the early seasons but it’s close.
As the show wraps up I’m reminded of everything I once loved about Glee: the characters and the songs. I love the classic members of New Directions. I loved Finchel and I absolutely adore Klaine! And *spoilers* just last week I realized how much I had missed Jesse St. James. My fangirl heart was so excited and I realized the only way Rachel can be happy in my books is if she’s with Jesse.
I have also always loved the songs. There are over 500 in my iTunes and I know I’m missing a bunch from the later seasons. For this post I had some help from my little sister, Lex. We have each put together our own personal list of Glee’s 25 best songs. It was a hard task but I think these are the songs we’re both going to be listening to for years to come.
25. Hungry Like the Wolf/Rio
Matt Bomber, enough said! And those few growly like parts, yes please.
I love this song, and of course Glee did the song justice. I liked how in the performance they were able to put differences aside and welcome the deaf school into the choir room.
23. Some Nights
A great song and performance. They make me want to get up and dance with them!
I loved this song before and I love the Glee version as well. Kurt and Blaine really crushed this song!
21. We Are Young
Overall a great group performance. This was also the first time I heard this song and I immediately had to download the original. This group number also reminds me of how much I love Glee and how great their group numbers are.
20. Don’t You Want Me
Rachel and Blaine are my two favorite voices on the show so when they finally did a duet of course it was going to be awesome. Super fun too!
19. Any Way You Want It/Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’
A super fun group number and catchy mash up!
18. This is the New Year
This song reminded me on the old Glee. I feel like Glee had a little bit of a lull when they began introducing all the new characters in. But this song reminded me why I loved Glee in the first place!
17. Without You
I loved this song before and of course I loved Rachel’s version.
16. Roots Before Branches
I really enjoy this song, and another great Rachel solo. I also think it was a great song for Rachel to sing when she left her old life in Lima and ventures off to New York.
15. Somebody to Love
These old Glee group performances with the original members are just so good!
I loved Rachel and Finn duets. They were so good together musically, on the show, and in real life!
13. Start Me Up/Living on a Prayer
I find this mash-up so much fun! And what mash-up could be bad with Living on a Prayer in it?
12. Somewhere Only We Know
Again Blaine makes me love a song that I had not heard before. Such a sweet song!
11. Don’t Rain On My Parade
Another great song to sing along to! Rachel rocks it! One of her best performances in my opinion.
10. Get it Right
I mean how could Rachel not be flawless during an original song?
9. Cough Syrup
I don’t think I had heard of this song before Blaine sang it. But of course Blaine could make me love any song. I like the powerfulness and the message it has. I also think Glee put it in a great place during the show with just Blaine standing on the stage singing it while everything crumbles around him. So good!
8. Defying Gravity
I love this song. Kurt and Rachel go good together when they sing Wicked songs. Another great song to sing along too!
I just love singing this song, one of my favorite Rachel solos.
6. Here’s to Us
Another great Rachel solo that I love to belt out along with her in my car! This song is a little heartbreaking now as it was sung for Rachel and Finn. And with that look they give each other you can tell all the feelings they had each other, breaks my heart!
5. For Good
When this song was first shown on Glee, I had not seen Wicked. But even not having seen it I loved the powerfulness the song builds up to and I think Rachel and Kurt’s voices really mesh well on this song. Now having seen the musical I love the song even more! But this Glee version is still my favorite.
4. Don’t Stop Believing
I still remember watching the first Glee episode and them singing this song. This song made me fall in love with Glee. Watching the original Glee group and seeing their love for singing and the Glee club made me realize that this was for sure going to be a show that I had to watch!
3. Paradise by the Dashboard Lights
Growing up listening to Meat Loaf, I never thought Glee would sing his songs. But they did! And they won regionals doing it! Glee definitely did this Meatloaf song justice. Cutting down a ten minute song into about three minutes isn’t an easy challenge. But they rocked this song making it super catchy and fun to sing along to. Definitely one of my favorite performances too.
2. It’s All Coming Back to Me Now
Meatloaf again – Way to go Glee! This is definitely my favorite Rachel solo. To me there is nothing better then Rachel belting out a great song.
1. Total Eclipse of the Heart
I just completely love this song, and I’m not fully sure why. I love singing along to it as well as singing along to the Glee Karaoke version with my sister, I always got to sing Rachel’s part!
As hard as it was to pick only 25 Glee songs out of the hundreds they have, I really enjoyed doing it. It reminded me how great Glee is and how many amazing songs they had during their 6 seasons. It reminded me how much I am going to miss Glee and hearing new Rachel solos.
25. Smooth Criminal
I love the sound of the cello in this and turning it into a duet is a nice new dynamic. Plus this is such an odd combination. Why were Santana and Sebastian together anyways??
24. Crazy/U Drive Me Crazy
I loved all the Britney numbers but especially this mash-up! Almost every other Britney song simply sounded like the original. Except for this one, it’s so pretty. I also love the Glee version of 3.
I don’t remember this song when it actually aired. But I’ve since fallen in love with both it and Santana. Santana was so under appreciated in the early seasons.
22. Keep Holding On
Classic first season group number. It’s so heartwarming when everyone rallies for Quinn. I miss her (and Finn). And the male part in this song is a lot harder than Total Eclipse of the Heart.
21. Silly Love Songs
I like everything Blaine does. A super close second here was “All You Need is Love”.
20. Somebody That I Used To Know
Matt Bomer is sexy. That and the anger in this song make it perfect. I just realized that I love emotional Blaine.
Kurt’s voice and innocence and The Beatles. Perfect. Plus isn’t this when Blaine first falls for Kurt?
18. Run Joey Run
This song is awful and the performance is even worse. But I absolutely love it. I love to sing along in an overly dramatic way.
17. Loser Like Me
I love this original song. I love the message. Super catchy and super relatable. I love rocking out in my car to it.
16. Touch A Touch A Touch A Touch Me
I love the entire Rocky Horror soundtrack; it was hard to chose just one song. I think I listened to the entire soundtrack on repeat for months a few years back. This song is so fun and catchy. I think it’s the only performance from Emma I can fully remember.
15. Poker Face
I love how this song is slowed down. And Idina Menzel can do no wrong.
14. Some Nights
It was moments like this that I didn’t miss the original Glee club members. This is fun and powerful and exciting. Everything a big group number should be.
13. The Scientist
This is my favourite Coldplay song and that, along with the situation all my favourite couples found themselves in, just broke my heart.
12. Papa Don’t Preach
Quinn’s alto was just perfect for my singing voice. Super cute and catchy, I must have listened to this a million times by now.
11. Don’t Rain on My Parade
Because no one is better to sing along to in your car. Rachel has a number of songs that are great for that! Shout out here to “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”, “Taking Chances” and “Get It Right” – everyone loves a good Rachel solo.
10. Somewhere Only We Know
All I want is for Blaine to sing me a love song. Kurt is a lucky fellow.
9. Total Eclipse of the Heart
As Lex already mentioned this is a classic in our household. We sang it playing Glee Karaoke and even now we keep our parts when singing along in the car. She’s Rachel and I’m all of her men. I was always so proud of my Finn voice! Though on a recent rewatch I see that Jesse actually sings the majority of the male part, I always thought I was Finn.
8. Give Your Heart a Break
I love this episode and I love the slow take on this song. I love to sing along at the top of my lungs.
7. Don’t You Want Me
This is a Blaine and Rachel duet that couldn’t be more fun! Why weren’t there more of these?
6. Rolling in the Deep
Glee and Adele is a great mix. I love the slowed down version of this and the re-appearance of Jesse St. James. I forgot how much I loved him. The anger in this version just makes it perfect!
5. Paradise By The Dashboard Lights
I grew up listening to Meat Loaf and I’m happy to say I know all the words. My dad would be so proud. I think this is the only Glee performance he’s ever seen.
4. Defying Gravity
I also didn’t know much about Wicked when I first heard this song but I became a fan right away. The competition between Kurt and Rachel turned into such a beautiful friendship.
3. Don’t Stop Believing
Classic Glee. I loved it when they sang it in the pilot and I’ve loved it every time since. Will it make an appearance in the finale?
2. Teenage Dream (Both Versions)
I love Blaine. This was the first song we heard him sing and like Kurt, I fell in love. I’m almost positive I like this version more than the original. And then there’s that achingly beautiful acoustic version we saw in “The Break Up”. Simply heartbreaking and such a meaningful song for Klaine.
1. Rumour Has It/Somebody to Love
I just love this mash-up! I remember first hearing it on my Europe trip and then going back and re-watching it over and over again for the remainder of our trip. Plus it’s possible this song started the Adele obsession that lasted for 2 months in Europe. Makes me really want a new Adele album!
Glee songs are always catchy and are always conveying a message. Even now I can listen to these songs and almost always remember the scene and exactly what the characters were going through. I think that’s something great to take away from a show. I’ll be watching and probably crying during the finale. Perhaps I’ll come back here and let you know my thoughts.
