Valentine’s Day is less than a month away (three weeks actually) which means it’s prime time to get on top of gift buying! But what does one buy their lover on this auspicious day? The cliched answer is easy: Flowers, Chocolates, Jewelry, a Teddy Bear and a Card. “How typical,” you say, “not very inspired.” Yes reader, you could look at it that way…or you could say it is classic! As long as you give it an updated and personalized twist. Here are a few ideas of how (& where) you can take a classic and make it your own…and impress the most important fanboy or fangirl in your life!
Darkroom & Dearly is an eco-friendly shop packed full of Valentine’s love. In their own words “Darkroom & Dearly brings you handmade paper goods with plenty of silly, sweet and (slightly) geeky flair to brighten your day!”
Memoria Creative is another one of the many quality paper good shops in Etsy. I love the quirky pop culture references sprinkled with a healthy dose of humour. It’s really the splash of sass that sets them apart.
OC Bead Sprites creates beaded creations that appear pixelated in ‘8-bit’ style. Among them are a variety of 8-bit flowers, including Mario’s Piranha Plants & Fire Flower and Zelda’s Heart Flowers. Aren’t these preferable to real flowers that will just die in a matter of days?
Geekapalooza also carries 8-bit flowers. Their two options include a Mario-style bouquet set and a variety of Piranha Plants. Think hard about your geek girl and answer truthfully: Red Roses? or Piranha Plants?
Sweet Belle Cakes…yum! So many nerdy chocolates to choose from! Giving a girl a box of chocolates seems horribly cliched, but giving her chocolates tailored to her (from her favourite tv show/movie/book/game/etc) is pricelessly thoughtful.
Lunar Wolf Treats has even more fangirl options than Sweet Belle, which means you have a vast selection! When I look at all of the nerdy options I can’t help but feel like my life really is like a box of chocolates.
Fan Girl Mama is a stellar alternative to the cliched teddy bear gift. It has a multitude of fandom dolls to choose from…like any doll you can think of! In the words of the shop owner “I am all about custom orders. Seriously. Just ask me. There is no fandom too big or too small <3 If you don’t see your fandom listed here just ask me and I will be only too happy to make you a doll of your favorite character. I am a fangirl, too, so your feels are safe with me.”
Fandom Fluff provides an opportunity for you to get crafty. Rather than sell the actual dolls, this shop offers instant-download patterns for Marvel themed felt dolls. Not only is the gift thoughtful in that you know your lover is into the Avengers, but also in that you will have made it yourself!
A Few Enchanted Roses provides a selection of prop-like geek jewelry. The main focuses are the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings universes, but there are a few pieces for the fandom-verse as a whole. I have always wanted an Evenstar of my own…Happy Valentine’s Day to Me?
Paul Michael Design is for the big spender. With necklaces and rings in the hundreds or thousands of dollars they are definitely a splurge, but if you can afford them they are beautiful. Artfully designed and tactfully geeky, i wish I had a man to give me one of these.
Good Luck with you shopping and your grand romantic plans!
Love & Luck,
