I ended my last post, where I reviewed 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut album while presenting facts about the band, by saying I’d unfortunately reached the end of the album…but that was a LIE! I purchased the Extended Edition, and if you are wondering if it is worth it, it is.
BONUS Track #1 – Social Casualty
This song takes me back to Jr High School when I first discovered Green Day. Although it has a healthy dose of pop over Green Day’s Minority, I’m all up for encouraging a little rebellion against the norm in today’s teens. This is a stellar way to start off the Bonus Tracks. This was worth the extra $2
BONUS 5SoS Fact #1: Luke
Luke Hemmings – Lead Vocals/Guitar
Born: July 16, 1996
– Is apparently the most responsible, eats the most and gives the best hugs
– Said to be “the next Harry Styles”…which basically means he’s a hunk-in-training
BONUS Track #2 – Never Be
The pose of the lyrics is quite lovely & magical. It’s inspirational “live while we’re young” (to quote 1D) message is rearranged with a unique approach. Teens, take note and take advantage of your free & innocent years. Adults, take note and don’t let go of your Peter Pan never-grow-up mentality.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #2: Michael
Michael Clifford – Guitarist
Born: November 20, 1995
– Is the sassiest member of the band
– Check out that hair…seriously check it out. It’s different in every picture.
BONUS Track #3 – Voodoo Doll
*Yawn* This was my least favorite song of the album. I just wasn’t feeling the beat, the melody or the lyrics. Sorry 5SoS but I could have done without this one, especially compared to the rock hits included on the main record.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #3: Album Sales
5SoS’s debut album saw 115,000 preorders and surged to #1 on the iTunes charts the instant it was released.
BONUS Track #4 – Greenlight
One more pop-punk anthem for good measure. This is going to make me sound super lame, but I enjoy the good morals on this record. Sure the protagonist of Good Girl is sneaking out of the house, but she’s also smart, independent & is going to get into Harvard. Yes the boys are trying to get with the girl in End Up Here but they also see her worth & give her respect. And here in Greenlight there is sexually flirtatious vibe going on, but the chorus is all about asking for permission to make a move. So many songs these days make women out to be objects, but 5SoS is sending a message to their young female fans that they like strong women.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #4: Oprah
Luke has Oprah Winfreys phone number saved in his phone. Not sure how he got it but that’s pretty cool.
BONUS Track #5 – Mrs All American (On North American Release)
5SoS, you dogs. Look at you pandering to the international crowd with country specific bonus material. I find the title ‘Mrs All American’ kind of clunky & unflattering…not like the coveted & dainty Miss America…but I appreciate the effort. And the ‘Nananananana’ part is my favorite gibberish lyrics of the album.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #5: Calum
Calum Hood – Bassist
Born: January 25, 1996
– Calum is the most active songwriter of the group.
– Mint Chocolate Chip is his favorite ice cream flavor
BONUS Track #6 – English Love Affair (On UK Release)
The beat catches your attention right off the top. Do you think 5SoS purposely made the UK song more rock-heavy than the pop-centric All American track? Are Brits just more hardcore than us North Americans? I’m unfortunately having to lump myself in with the USA because there’s no “My Canadian Princess” or similar song. It’s extra unfortunate because I prefer this area-specific exclusive.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #6: Ashton
Ashton Irwin – Drummer
Born: July 7, 1994
– Before he joined the band he’d seen 5SOS on YouTube & thought they were douche
– He hates ducks
BONUS Track #7 – Lost Boy (On Australian Release)
A fun song, but I’m still holding my position that the UK Bonus track is the best.
BONUS 5SoS Fact #7: Fan
I’m hooked. It’s official: I have joined the 5SoS Fam & you should too.
Now we’ve actually reached the end L But seriously…on repeat…for the next 3 months… I wonder how long it will take before I can pick out each of their vocals?
Love & Luck,
Check out Part One of this post (with the standard release material)! And if you’d like a copy of the individual lyrics graphics I’ll have them all posted on my tumblr.
